For a while the plate looked completely dead but one half is seeming to make a come back including a little piece above the acan.

Should someone in this situation cut off the dead portions or leave the coral to sort out this situation itself?

following as have same issue - assume it is on its way out

leave it in the tank whole. At times some people have had plates die and months later babies popped out of the dead plate.

Wait it out and hope it recovers. If it doesn’t toss it in the back of the tank somewhere where it’s still getting a little light but out of the way. Check on it every once in awhile. There is a good possibility that babies could sprout up from it. Mine died, turned bone white, then got ugly looking from algae and stuff. Then 6 months later babies started.
