hello everyone, i have a green bubble tip anemone that my clownfish won't go near which is of course understandable... since they don't host it, then there would be no harm in removing it if i wanted to... so the question is, do i get some sexy anemone shrimp and an anemone crab or do i remove the anemone so i can add some pipe fish? let me know your opinions, curious to see what everyone thinks!

Pipe fish can be very hard to take care of. Unless you have a large, well established tank I would not try them. That is just my opinion. You probably know more about this than I do but the only ones I have seen eat live brine shrimp or something like that. I thought about keeping dwarf seashores and also getting a few pipefish but you have to feed them 2 times a day and you have to hatch the shrimp yourself.

How old are your clownfish? Sometimes they won't host anything until they are about a year old but different clownfish act differently. If you decide not to get ride of the anemone then you would not be able to get sexy shrimp AND an anemone crab. I have heard of stories where anemone crabs have fought off clownfish for an anemone so they would probably kill or harm the shrimp. Also a lot of larger of aggressive fish will eat the shrimp.

I probably sound really mean and I am raining all over your parade and I am sorry if I am, but if you want and anemone crab they are a great addition to any reef tank. I personally love sexy shrimp and I have a pair of them in my 29 gallon reef and one loves my rose BTA and the other loves my frogspawn. If you have a smaller tank that doesn't have and bigger fish or hawk fish in it you should be fine to keep sexy shrimp.

pipe fish generally have the same diet as dragonetes and garden eels, which i have both in my tank. never had an anemone crab, didn't know they could be so aggressive! if i did get rid of the anemone, i wouldnt get a sexy shrimp or a crab, i would get rid of it for the pipe fish

Sorry, I didn't realize that you have had so much experience with pipefish.
Anemone crabs typically aren't that aggressive. They just are very protective of their anemone. They only go after things that would want to take the anemone from them.

If I had the chance to keep a pipefish I would probably take it. They are so cool!!!!!

i think the sexy shrimp will most likely end up hosting my GSP... i'll see what they go to first. if it's the GSP i'll get rid of the anemone and get pipefish. dwarf seahorses are pretty easy to do, i am getting those for my dorm room when i go to college! let me know if you would like any help with pipefish/seahorses... both are some of my favorite fish in the hobby

Just out of curiosity, how old are you?
Because I am 13 and I have not found any other person on this website that wasn't an adult.

I actually do have some questions about pipefish and seahorses.
Are there any pipefish that get big enough to eat frozen foods or any kind of non-living food because I would die if I could get some?

One of the fish stores that I love has started selling seahorses that only get 3-4inches and they eat frozen foods. The guy there says that I could keep a pair in a 5 gallon tank but that seems a little small. Do you think that they could live in a 5 gallon tank or would they do better in a 10 gallon?

Thanks (I will probably have some questions in the future)

They were to big to be dwarf seahorses. They were 3-4 inches

dwarf seahorses need 3 gallons per pair. any other seahorse I wouldn't put in anything below 5 gallons. sea horses and pipefish arent as stubborn as dragonetes, if you are persistent with frozen food, they will eventually eat it. i feed mine brine (sometimes live) in the morning and mysis at night, and i also add live copepods once a month. and i am 17, I haven't really seen anyone around my age on here either

If I were to get the 5 gallon tank and put the 2 seahorses in it would I also be able to keep a pipefish in there too as long as it at frozen foods? I really want the seahorses but they cost $180 EACH!!!

I might ask my parents to a least pay for the tank for my birthday because really want a pair of seahorses.

dwarf seahorses cost about $60 for a pair. most pipefish need about a 30 gallon tank

Thanks for the replies.
Do dwarf seahorses get big enough to eat frozen foods or do they only eat live foods?

nope, dwarf sea horses will only eat live foods (usually)... copepods and small live brine is what i feed mine

Thanks for all of your help. I'll make a thread if I ever do get those seahorses :)

The pipe fish are easier. Dragonfaces need pods to start but are pretty easy to train on frozen. the small banded are super easy. start there.
Big prob with seahorses they are messy. lotsa poop lotsa food so the usually need a special tank just to deal with that.
