So I've been fragging a green slimer (Acropora yongei), and I have this piece which only has a bit of skin/open polyps on one side of the branch. If it's at all possible to get this growing again, what's the best way to do it?

Ideas include trimming out as much of the excess skeleton as I can. Another idea could be putting it down, with the living polyps facing up, in the hopes it might start encrusting/branching.

Thoughts?

If it stays healthy, it should encrust back over the dead skeleton. I'd kept it the way it is. Gently brush off the algae from the dead areas. Plenty of flow.

I would cut off as much dead as possible and glue it to a frag disc, put glue all the way up to the flesh, then put it in some nice flow.

With the algae being present and abundant on the frag it leads me to think that there may be detritus hidden throughout your tank causing excess nutrients, i would suggest using a powerhead and blow off your rock work.

update: It's encrusted over a lot of the empty space, and is starting to form small branches.

And oddly enough, a different Green Slimer piece from the same original colony(not the one above it in the first photo, whcih is now an almost 100% dead acro of a different species) has browned out after a tank crash two weeks ago, but this one has kept its color.
