About 2x a week, I feed chopped up frozen, local caught Littleneck clams for this starfish and my hermit crabs. It's usually completely submerged in the sand, and only ascends to the surface at night when I feed meaty foods. Any suggestions what else I should feed it? Frozen shrimp? Chopped fish?

I dont go out of the way to feed mine I feed my tank rods that has a bit of everything in it and it has been fine probably doubled in size length wise but much thicker they eat what is in the sand and on it some times I will see it on the glass before waterchange day getting algae

Is this the food you feed?

Agreed here. They're suppose to really take care of themselves eating under the sand mostly from my reads. This is assuming you have a mature system with enough food in the sand that can support the starfish. Theory is if it's out of the sand and on the glass, that it's not getting enough food in the sand thus hunting elsewhere.

The ironic thing is my own sand sifting has an odd behavior. I'm in a mature 180 with lots of junk in the sand, yet the dang thing won't go into the sand. It seems to prefer the areas where the sand meets the glass height for whatever reason. I'll move to sand and it'll wonder back to the same areas. It's not scaling the glass just seems to like the algae there.
