I keep little rock rubble in all my HOBs. Great place to grow pods and helps with nutrient export too. If the HOB is large enough and you can get light on it, you can do a algae scrubber. Not sure even the smallest I have seen will fit in a HOB, but maybe.
I usually just add some filter material at first and if the tank is a bit dirty. I also will use chemipure blue as needed.
I have a 6g. I keep clowns in there from juveniles to about 2-2.5 years old (kept about 2 years in tank). They are fine. After that, you need to move them. However, this is with ocellaris clowns. Most others except maybe the pink skunk grow too fast.
