What to look for when new fish arrives?

Has anyone found or know of information on what to look for when a new fish arrives? Specifically, what are the signs of different diseases/problems/etc? How do you look at a fish and eliminate some of the stuff that can be eliminated by just viewing the fish for the first 10min or so?
