Hi guys,

need to get my rsr250 up and running- just can’t decide between real reef rock /Marco rock or go with Live Rock. Pros and Cons to both for me
what are the members preference?

Avoid live rock to avoid pests. I would just go with what you think looks best and what you want to spend. Just use bottled bacteria with some ammonia source and cycle with that

After being at RAP This past weekend and seeing many tanks set up with it- I cannot see filling a new tank with anything other in the future. Once water is added- looks like a fully seeded tank!

I would go Dry rock or marco rock. Live rock comes with a lot of risks pests etc. It's a lot easier to manage what is being introduced to your tank when you limit the possibilities of what you don't intend on introducing in the first place. You can add the bacteria, buy the pods, acquire macro algae that's clean all separate.

Dry rock all the way I’ve seen a lot of horror stories with pest coming in on live rock

It’s sooooo expensive- I’m thinking second hand live rock for a 1/3rd of the price and bleaching it clean

I love dry rock and heres why:
Pros:
Usually cheaper
Cooler look imo
No Pests!!!
Easier to aquascape from my experience
I can take my time aquascaping it without worrying about micro/macro fauna die off
Seems to hold glue better than my old live rocks

Cons:
No pods (but im sure pods will be introduced from the first or second coral frag u get)
No chance of finding cool hitchhikers to brag about
Ya gotta buy your own bacteria if u want to cycle it quicker
