We started our tank about 10 months ago. It was given to us. It's a corner tank. Guessing 35 to 40 gl. I'm looking to go to the next level. On a shoe string budget. Lol. I have only been running a basic Marineland hangon filter It has couple bio wheels... I have always had tropical fish and just what we did .. What should I do next too make my thrive. I feel it should be better. Skimmer? Sump? Suggestions? More live rock? Oh I have 6 bulb current T5 that was my last purchase. Things are going good as I think they can be..

An overflow box, sump and return pump would be my next purchase if you want to take it to the next level. They make hang on back overflows or you can drill. Whichever you feel most comfortable with
As for a sump you can pick up a tank from Petco when they have the $1 per gallon sale and have lowes or home depot cut baffles and silicone them I yourself. Or you can be baller and buy a awesome acrylic sump from one of our sponsors like synergy.

Relax its Miller Time...You've lasted this long without breaking the bank. New Rock is always as good start of a break down and rebuild. New corals can be a great addition. Building that dream cabinet and organization can make your life even easier. You can always sit back and relax enjoy your tank as is and dont worry about the "nextstep". I have to remember to heed my own advice!!!

Thanks. I'm definitely not crafty. Lol. What should be the ratio? Sump.. I have little space in cabinet underneath. You say hang on sump.. options . Thanks. Oh I'm patient. I've been on comp for 6 more the it's all I can do. Lol.

Like I said too much time on my hands.. Had a little problem for a but with dna. I believe it to be clearing up. Now it thick great algea.. Time too beef up the clean up crew

I can offer my opinion on sump sizing.

BIG

the OPTIMAL size for a sump is "as big as you can possibly justify".
MINIMUM size depends on your situation though.

more water volume always helps keep a tank stable
extra space for little micro-life to live (helps break down waste)
extra space for equipment
more room to work with
larger, more effective, refugium space
cheap tanks are only $1/gallon up to around 55 gallons usually
etc.

basically, more is better.
