I'm curious as to what tripod people are using for their macro work. I've been using a Ravelli which is pretty sturdy and solid, and i love the pistol grip, but has it's drawbacks. The biggest being that the camera mount isn't very solid in the tripod and tends to want to rock or move on me. So what tripods are all of you using and would you recommend them?

I'm using:
Manfrotto 685 MonoPod with the 222 joystick ballhead
manfrotto 190XPROB TriPod with 486RC2 ballhead
quite pleased with them.

sounds like a pretty solid setup that you have. have you noticed any drawbacks to the tripod/ball head combo? anything that you would like to see done differently?

Not really,
The 190XPROB model is quite flexible and even allows for placing the center support horizontal to have the camera pointing down to take shots of flowers or other objects below the camera...
The ball head itself is not the best out there and might not be stable enough for heavier Camera lense combos... Still for the lenses I use it has been pretty stable.
I frequently shoot using reversing rings and or extension tubes and using a macro rail and that is the ultimate test for stability.
the only drawback is the weight as it's not a carbon fiber tripod, which makes it annoying on hiking trips or when on travel but on the other side it makes for a more stable setup in windy situations...

Well I ordered a tripod. I ended up with the Slik Pro 700DX. It is a very heavy tripod with a decent head on it for amateur video panning. I went for the heaviest tripod I could find since it will probably stay by my aquarium so portability isn't an issue. I may find myself leaving my camera on the tripod for extended periods of time and I was worried about my dogs knocking it over.

I have been using the Slik 500hd, has been a great tripod over the years. Great choice, in my opinion.

The 500hd was my original pick but then I found the 700dx which was heavier and taller and a little less money. Since it probably won't ever leave the house, heavier isn't a bad thing to save some money.
