New tank! Just completed cycle, but I still don't have my lights hooked up yet. I'm assuming this is what has kept the uglies from hitting me full bore yet! The tank is basically 2+ months old.

I did put a ball of chaeto in my sump refug area and started running a Mars-Hydro grow light over the sump at night time about a week ago. The chaeto seems to have increased a little, but this brown looking algae is really taking off wherever the grow light shines. Is this a tyoe of algae I want to remove, or let it go in the refugium?

Temp 78.8
pH 8.11
SG: 1.025
Nitrates: 25 (Salifert)
Phosphates: .06 (Hanna)

Before 50% water change after cycle, nitrates were around 50-75 regularly. I was going to move my Clowns over tomorrow... they've been in QT for 2 months and looking good. I currently have a few nerite and cerith snails in the tank already.

Sorry... helps if i add the pics, lol

Slime algaes and cyano and diatoms and such. Normal. Safe.

Thanks! I put a single cerith snail in the fuge area and he seems to be making tracks through it...i guess he's eating it. I need to figure a way to keep the fuge light only in that area...my baffles around the fuge are clear glass... big mistake!

Lol. IMO , it's not going to stay clean forever. That's where you're supposed to keep the funk.

It's going to be tough letting it get all dirty...I like things organised, lol. This will be a good fight against my OCD, lol.

Still learning here as I go. Did you think that looks like brown cyano, though? I still don't have any algae showing in the DT yet. Yesterday, my nice green new cheato started falling apart and turning pale! I moved my par38 grow light closer to the water to see if that helps... might need to be further away, who knows? Lol

Or flow. If it's young , low flow low nutints it can kill chato. If you don't have nutiruts showing or algae yet in the DT you really might not need a fuge yet.

It'll stay cleaner with no light. Lol.

And a fuge might not be up your alley too and you might eat to look at Roger methods to the same end.

I was assuming my flow in the refugium was ok since the chaeto was tumbling nicely like i see in videos. My sump is: skimmer>refug>return so everything going into the sump goes through the refug. My nutrients are: nitrates 25ppm, phosphate 0.07. The reason i started the chaeto was to try to head off big algae breakouts in the display tank. I'm assuming i haven't had the regular diatom/cyano tank uglies hitting yet because I'm not running any lights yet in my DT... I've been a little lazy (and confused with my controller) setting them up. I figure I'll be hitting those uglies when the lights come on since my nitrates are so high.

It's going to be fun.
