Just starting my 43 gallon Red Sea reefer tank I'm looking to have a small reef in the tank with some fish but unsure of what type of filtration in the sump. I got a protein skimmer but not sure if I should use bio balls or a refugium system. What do you guys recommend?

Just say no to Bioballs...Pond martix by Seachem is the way to go, It takes about ten weeks to set up your bacterial colony and to notice your nitrates are at zero. Refugiums work but to me is another headache I have to maintain. Just drop that Martix in a bag and place it in your sump. Clean it off everytime you clean your tank and your done.

Your main goal is nutrient export.
keep reading and find what suites you best.
