In my experience with LFS I usually bow out when a young guy tells me something so off the wall as advice that I figure this place knows less than I do, and that is not good. My expectations are super low going in, and I know that I need to already possess the knowledge I need going in.

The one I visit but refuse to buy anything .

Walked in to the freshwater area to take a peak and there was a cichlid with a third of its body covered in ich and it was being kept on display with others fish. And when I asked for a bucket of 1.025 water and a bucket of RODI and I got home and found out it was 1.040 and 1.010

Lol last straw recently for a store i go to occasionally was when i wanted to buy a dragon soul torch. He had like 6 or 7 of them.
He picked one out for me lol after i said i wanted to look at all of them... and he said this one is perfect. I said no it looks like its been receeding quickly. The skeleton a good 4mm or so below the septa (spines) was bleach white. And the flesh was right on the rim.. a sign of tissue recession. If its white it receeded fast and algae didnt have time to grow.
He told me thats new growth.. and i said no it isnt.. and he put it down and walked off mumblung he isnt going to argue with me and as he walked iff he went PSShhht.
And i finally lost it there. I turned around and said you know.. Youre lying tactics may work on new people but not me. The coral is receeding and it was due to his systen crash he had which hurt all his torchs and killed some he even told me that 2 days prior.
I also said... Do you have mental problems or something ? Because everytime i am in this store you give me attitude. EVERYTIME i said, even my girlfriend notices it. He has issues.
I tild him 300$ is alot of noney if a torch is sick i dont want it.. I said i asked to see the other ones and you just walked off giving me attitude. I told him.. are you a child or something ? Only babies walk away like that.
He told me to get outa the store.. I was already planning too anyway. I just wanted him to know how i felt before i left.
I wrote him a bad review online on google and left it at that. He lotterally does this everytime im in there though.. Hes got a superiority complex. He berates you. And hes just plain rude every time. Thats why i finally snapped.
And you know what i have no issue giving the store name out in here either. Blue ribbon koi in manassas virginia. Screw that guy and his poor attitude issues.
Another crappy store is supreme reefs in northern va... overpriced.. and the guy lives in his shop which is a storage unit or some kind of garage he rents. Which is illegal. He also smokes weed in his store. I dont care if people these days think weed is cool and politicians are caving into legalizing it. Its no different than drinking in public. It should be illegal and it is in the state of virginia.
The other shop im starting to not like is a new shop in the area. Owner is super nice... gets great corals in.. clean tanks. But his fish are always riddled in velvet.. and his tanks gave me a bacterial infection that killed 2000$ in corals. I fixed it with 200$ in antibiotics. And i told him how i did it.. and he refuses to dose his tanks to fix the issue. Instead he wants me to keep it quiet and still sells corals to people with the potential of giving them the disease.

I'm lucky with my LFS. Most are pretty good. The closest to me is more of a general pet store, but still has a decent selection of fish and basic coral. I once pointed out a fish had ich, hoping to get a discount and they wouldn't even sell it to me at all once they saw it had ich. I was going to take it and treat it, since I would have treated it in QT anyway, told them that and they were like nah.
There is one nearby that I don't go to. I once bought some RO water when I first moved here, and it was greenish in tint. Also their selection was not very great, it was like they went and caught all their stuff off the coast(I live on gulf coast). I never went back.
Another that mostly does online orders in a basement. I've never dropped in, but their online selection looks decent. I often forget about them however when looking for fish.
Then I have another that is about 15 minutes away. They have lots of coral and they generally collect the pricer stuff. The same for fish as well. The only downside is they are only open like 3 days a week, and then only like 6 hours. But great selection and very clean tanks. It's funny that I consider them kind of far away, considering I've had to drive over an hour for a fish store in other places I've lived. I usually only stop if I'm driving by.
And then I have bigger places like coral corral in Tampa about 40 minutes away. Good for LPS and softies. Huge selection and good prices.
And then there is Orlando about 2 hours away. I know some of those places are pretty popular online and in the hobby, but all I can say is they like their coral a heck of a lot more than I do. Ridiculous prices if you ask me. That's where I saw "PP" on the prices for the first time. I was like, what the heck is PP. And they were like "Per Polyp". I just laughed to myself, browsed and didn't buy anything.

I've Never Come across a FIsh Store that didn't work out for me, and I've come across many in my Hobby years.
You just have to be smart about your shopping, and keeping money in your wallet till you see something of proper-value.
Each store has it's plus's and negatives.
Some larger stores may have too high sticker prices. However if you tell them you'll just shop elsewhere they will usually price match. They won't change the sticker for the next sucker customer, but they do want you money.
Some stores have healther and better kept fish, and that's where you get your fish. Always QT no matter what.
Some stores may have poor quality or limited corals, but if you drop by every so often you might find something unique. Windows shopping is alway fun, and you don't have to buy.
Another thing I learned from high end niche stores or sellers is if prices are too high, then take you time to get to know the staff and owners. Buy only what you find of value to you (Special hard to find specicimens are worth spending more, just don't get lured to pay for overprice items that are not high end/rare). Over time as a known face, and personality the special discounts can come you way.
OK. There was one bad establishment. I once went to a Coral/Fish seller than ran their setup in a humid/moldy basement with stacks and rows of tanks. Dirty buckets, towels and stuff everywhere. Good stock...but... I actually came out of there with with alergy like breathing symptoms. I have no alergies, and I never went back.

As unhelpful as they were I wont quite throw them fully under the bus . However I will say they are in Eastern Canada , Quebec

What was the last straw for me... A sweet combo of telling me, a total newb that "inverts don't need to be quarantined" and a lovely protozoan parasite known as "Velvet".
Have since gone under new management, so I may try them again.

I have roughly 20 LFS all within a 2 block radius so I have choices. I’ll say that there are many that I don’t even step foot in because of poor practices of keeping fish and corals. I happily pay more for better corals and heathy fish.

It’s a famous fish street. And I took a job only because it’s right behind the fish street haha. No joke. Over the years, more and more saltwater stores have overtaken freshwater stores

First, I'll go back when I can.
Coronavirus. My LFS is an hour away and they shut down for a bit before reopening by appointment only. I didn't know that and was disappointed once. No biggie, but between my work schedule, family schedule, and their hours, it seems that I can only make it there once every few months. I made an appointment when the stars aligned again, drove all the way out there only to be told that they had to cancel my appointment. Third time, they shut down for a flurry. I'm done trying because I don't want to waste $20 in gas and an entire day worth of free time just to browse for $20-100 in merchandise. I wish them the best as they are a gem for Eastern PA.
