also, i was trying to figure out what the past crazes were....

2004 - rics?
2005 - sps / acans
2006 - acans / micros / zoas
2007 - zoas / aussie acans
2008 - ???

I don't know for sure, but I would say something non-SPS. Mainly due to the crazes tending to be the easier to keep species and appealing to a wider group of hobbyists. They also need to be easily fragged.

I know Blastos are starting to gain appeal as are the uniquely colorful Tracs we are seeing from Tonga and Aus. I don't think the latter will catch fire though as they are difficult to frag. Favia and Favaties perhaps.

I know I will be happy when the next trend kicks in though. As those whom I have purchased or traded with can attest to, I don't mind dropping some $$ for something I like that is healthy. But seeing an Acan colony cut up into single polyp frags is a shame.

how about Dendro's and Duncans in 2007... ;)

2008 is the year of Echinos, zoas, Aussie lords that kept their colors... :)

Chalice and Echinos is my guess and zoa/palys will continue to be hot as new ones come available.

As I said, i think the ease of fragging plays a big part in things.

i dont think dendro's and duncons reached crazed proporations....it was way too short lived, and only lasted a couple months before the market was flooded with green duncans...lol

the zoa crazy and aussie acan craze are done with IMO. i think the aussie acan craze had potential to last much longer, but sky high prices scared ALLOT of people away.....and frags were not plentiful due to allot of colonies being fragged up and frags dying.

echino's.......maybe that is the next one......but prices are still pretty cheap for them to be a craze (except the watermelon of course).

I agree Zoa Craze and Acan Craze is over. The market is flooded with Ausie Acans. Echinos were hot in 2005 so I dont know if that craze will come again. I think if they were to open Red Sea and Philliphines coral exports I am sure their will be some hot stuff we never seen before. But I doubt it will ever happen.

thats true to some extent......but IMO echino's are a pain to frag.....they are the most picky coral i've ever kept (aside from cloves).

i think its more due to the varience of colors coming in, thats what starts these crazes.

same thing happened with rics/acans/micros/sps/zoas/aussie acans. the craze started with a bunch of wicked new morphs hitting the scene.

the sps craze started with the emergence of the superman monti, followed by the rainbow monti and then the blue torts. prices went sky high for those even though conditions limited it to one group of hobbyists. they are easy to frag for most people IMO.

but the sps didnt last long prob due to that facts you mentioned.

i dont remember echino's ever being a hot thing (except the watermelon of course). but they were so hard to come by....and most chalices look "blah".

recently, watermelons and other similar awesome looking chalices have *just* become available....and i think now that people are able to get ahold of a watermelon....it will encourage them to look for other cool morphs. thus creating more demand for great looking chalices.

there seem to be allot of various species of challices. but the best looking ones in all the great colors are the ones in which the skin looks like "bubbles". that particular species is obviously different then the chalices that come into LFS via the "grab bag" shipment from the whole saler.

I think anything that keeps its color beings it was popular in 2005 or now will still be popular just depends on avaiblity the acan craze is still going if priced right and colorful just like the aussie stuff and pretty much anything else i think the craze part comes in when stuff is marked up 1000% and people are willing to pay crazy prices instead of fair which happens when the craze is over.

right, but its what causes the prices to be marked up 1000% which is the real cause of the craze. and thats demand for crazy new color morphs that all of a sudden start to come in, in somewhat large proportions enough to be spread around thinly and get the word out...thus creating a huge demand.

with the aussie acans, the craze was there before the prices ever went up. b/c those darn canadians were getting them in and selling them at DIRT cheap prices.

IMO, the aussie acan craze started to die when people from the US started buying them from the canadians and then started to sell them at ridiculous prices....which pretty much killed the craze when people either wouldn't pay those prices, and could find similar pieces for much cheaper through the regular whole sale connections.

yea most of my aussie stuff is priced to move as most people arnt interested in frags but i am fraging a few for those not wanting to spend the higher cost but i dont know what cannada importers pay but the aussie stuff is alot higher then the indo stuff probly 100-200% higher per piece at least from our importer and my markup is 30-100% just depends how bad me and keith want to move it im amazed at prices on some stuff i gess most places can afford to sit on it or they have folks willing to pay for it.

Rhizos and strange dendros are making a comeback! Rhizos are Crazy prices. Hopefully all the vendors on CZ can get in the front of the buss and not the back of the short buss. LOL

rare colors on chalices favias and aussie zoa

haven't rhizo's and dendro's always gone for crazy prices? they were even a year ago.

just cuz something is going for crazy prices b/c its ultra rare to even see pics of doesn't mean its reached craze status IMO.

craze status is reached when there is a TON of demand for it, which directly causes prices to go up accordingly.

i wonder if there is even such a thing as an aussie zoa....i havent seen any real distinction b/w regular zoas and these so called "aussie zoas" like you do in aussie acans vs. regular acans.

sometimes i wonder if the "aussie" name applied to other corals are just a marketing gimmeck now.

bro its like this
what ever was common before this summer is not aussie ... and all the corals we wore referring as japs is now aussie... i personally call awesie all the stuff which i never saw before the aussie craze

Are "rhizos" Rhizosmilia? They seem pretty obscure for a craze no?

color wise, i think there has been few nice ones coming in along with aussie shipments. i.e. headless horseman. there isn't a huge distinction, but it's still exciting to see new morphs emerge.

anyway, i'm gonna side with marcel here and say favias are going to be the next big craze. :)

with all the new high flow pumps available for much less money than in the past i expect more people will get into keeping sps, as they get easier to keep as we better replicate their habitat
