What will give me more total length after a year. 5 1" frags or 1 5" frag?

So the proper question would be "Which would get more growth? A 1 inch frag or a 5 in frag?" Because having 5 one inch frags doesn't make any sort of difference on their growth rate. I think to answer the question, if it's a real one, you would just have to buy one of each and see what happens.

Oh and how did I end up with 30 alerts to this one thread?

Thanks mods for cleaning that post up

It also depends on the frag, location, flow, and a plethora of other factors :)

If you don't mind me asking, what was the reason for me being tagged in this?

Sorry if the tags bothered anyone. I didn't think it was a big deal. I just wanted to get the attention of some people who might have good insight.

4fordfamily you were going to get tagged but I didn't realize you changed your name. I was looking for 3fordfamily. I guess it is a good thing I didn't tag you lol.

The growth on the 5 1in frags will be added together after a year. If each 1in frag grew to 3 in after a year that will count as 15 total inches. If the 5 in frag grows to 11 in after a year the 5 1in frags will win because 15in>11in. I hope that makes sense.

For this question we will assume all other variables are the same. I asked this question because I traded some frags for diffrent frags which are pretty large. I want to know if I would get more total growth if I break the frags down to smaller frags.

So just for kicks.... I think you'll get more growth out of the 5 smaller frags of the same coral. This is assuming all kinds of things of course, and I'm using your example to get my answer, but that's what I'm going with.

The tags didn't bother me at all, just curious. What type of corals are you talking about here? That could play a big role in the growth rate. Different growth patterns are affected in different ways by size. Say a monti cap would in theory grow faster from a larger piece because it would have a larger calcifying edge than a smaller piece would. On the other hand though with branching corals the more points there are the more growth you get because the growth from each point adds up. The growth you receive really depends on the type of coral, the growth pattern, the shape of the beginning piece, the placement, and the quality of your water.

I'd bet the 5 1" frags. Just my instinct. I would guess a smaller coral would have more urgent growth.
