I've been looking for a 180 gallon and was planning on running a 72" 6 bulb T5 but ran across a 220 with a footprint of 72 x 29 tall x 24. It has Metal Halides which is what I would run with the deeper tank if I go that route.
What would be your ultimate tank depth with a 72" length. My stand is for a 72" and I am sticking with it.
Woud you rather have the 24 or the 29"?

If you can get into the tank the 29" wouldn't be a problem. I had a tank that was ~30" and hated it because it was hard to get into and work with because it was acrylic and had small openings. It was a 75g very narrow and tall.

I think you would really like the larger tank. I say go for it.

Hey I have a couple of Duck Calls from Rogers, Arkansas. I have a little stool to help me when I am working in my 120 that is 24" deep.

Duck calls? Who made them? Pretty neat.

Yeah if you're stepping up from a 120 I wouldn't just go with a 180. Go for it. Get the big one!

I have a column tank that measures 20 across 18 front to back and 33" deep and I have no problems with t-5's I have 8 8watt bulbs 4 actinic that run from 7am -8pm I am upgrading to LEDs DIY w 55deg optics still mostly blues 21 royals and 7 soft whites along with 5 uv LEDs for the ultimate pop
If you go that deep and have a specific area that needs more light you can get a par 38 from rapid led for about 89.00 you can get a cheeper one that is dimmable from led wholesalers for 68 however I have read very many bad reviews about the quality and return policy 30 days not an hour later.
I actually ordered one and received it last night dims great. Great shimmer I'm using on my qt to help acclimate my fish to the lights.

Hands down - 24" ... I will never consider a 30" tank again. They are a PAIN to aquascape the bottom and when something falls, as things inevitably do, they are a PAIN to reach down to the bottom and fix. Unless you have extremely long arms, stick with the 24" depth.

I have a custom, eurobraced 72x30x22 that I love.
The store owner talked me in to 22" deep, which
I am greatful for, very easy to work in.

I just went threw the same question stepped up from a 120g. the lfs had a 240g or a 180g I went with the 180g IMO very nice tank

Both of my tanks are 30" tall, and I love them, as does everyone that sees them!! 1. Getting stuff off the floor is not that big a deal. 2. I RARELY ever have anything on the floor that isn't supposed to be there anyways... if you do, you need to glue stuff down better  I guess I'm just not the kind of person that has his hands in his tanks very often.

That said, my 240g FO upgrade will only be 24" tall because I didn't want a 300g tank, and the lateral swimming space is more important to the fish than vertical.
