What would cause brittle starfish to turn white?

I've had it over a year and about a week after I got it it started turning white. It used to be brown. Here are some pics. Somehow it knew I was around and darted for the rocks lol.

Pretty cool, although I have no answer to that one. Only thing I can come up with is that it wasn't mature when you got him.
