What would make you leave the hobby?

Honestly, if I could get out right now, I would.

Well I almost left the hobby 8 weeks ago. My mother had 3 strokes and I have been caring for her. Needless to say my tank was put on the back burner and it went to the pits. I told my wife I was gonna break it down and sell it all. She convinced me to downsize to a smaller tank that has been sitting in the garage for a few months. I did the swap on friday and everything turned out great. Probably my favorite tank out of the last 5 I have done.

Great wife you have there :)
Hope your mother is ok- best regards.

+1, till death do us part!! Last year my tank crashed, I lost a collection I had been building for about 7 years!! It was sickening! One day, poof, gone! I considered getting out then, but I didn't. I started over, and with the help of a lot of good fellow reefers, and the help of some awesome store owners through nor cal, I once again have a beautiful collection!! I've been broke the last year trying to rebuild, but happy! Amen!

no hater-ade here, just the plain truth did tyree make the oceans and reefs in which the corals grow? NO
when the day comes that someone can give me a reason as to why he should be able to market a coral and make the price go through the roof then ill retract my post.
Again no hate here its just a pet peeve of mine
Did Tyree claim to create the oceans and reefs In which corals grow? Where did you see or read this fact? Please provide a link if possible.. Thanks!
And about making prices go through the roof. Tyree LE corals are definitely not the most expensive corals around..
Basically if you don't like someone's corals don't buy them, still no reason to hate and flame someone. JMO..

I don't think he was serious when he wrote that. I don't think he's really hating.

Almost quit after i moved, lost a lot if stuff during the transition. Still makes me real depressed seeing pics if my tank before and looking at it now. But I'll rebuild. Couple hundred buck and I'll restock all my sps colonies with new ones. I don't think anything would really make me quit forever though.

nothing
things can get me to lose interest but never get out
even my empty tank with just water rock and sand is just fun to look at

Money or family illness. I have job security and good health insurance so both are unlikely (knock on wood).

It would take some considerable time to stop and think about my priorities if I had a serious structural tank failure in which it caused water damage to the entire lower level of my house.. THAT would probably put me out of the hobby for a year if not more. Lets hope that doesn't ever happen! KNOCK ON WOOD!

I doubt I'd ever leave unless time, money or family required me too. Even if I took a break I'm sure I'd get back in eventually.

I gave up the hobby a little while back because of money issues. I sold my 220 and everything in it for dirt cheap to get the bills paid quick. I lasted about 6 months away and remmebered i had a 90 acrylic cube in my mother in laws garage. set it up, and it lasted about 3 months, then bought a 125 and had it for a few but it was too small. now i am back in a 220 again and its starting to look small. Morale of the story is, if you quit, make sure you get rid of all the tanks you had laying around, because even a spare 10 gallon with a heater can get everything going again haha

Well let's just hope that none of us ever have to quit for any reason

Now that is a neat idea for sure. Never would have thought about something like that, just seems peaceful.

I left the hobby after losing my 58g dominate SPS tank that had all of the high end SPS from all diff people just killed me that i put all the work into it for a power outage to take it from me, and yes i had a backup power total of 36 hours worth but the power was out for almost 5 days there was nothing i could do and most everyone i knew including the LFS i worked at couldn't handle what i had and were having issues with power as well, took me almost 4 yrs to get back into it.
