I'm looking to move 4hrs away within a few months and will be temporarily staying with my parents or my brother (single and owns his home) for about 6 months. I have a 120 reef currently running and a brand new 180 in storage. I have 10 fish and about $1k of mixed corals. Where I'm going livestock selection will be slim to none and prices will be high.

Should I take the whole setup and set it back up at new location? I'll probably take a big hit in resale selling the tank there when I'm ready to transfer over to the 180.

Or pick up something smaller to make moving it easier and easier to set up. When I'm closer to the move date I'll rehome half of the fishes, break down the 120 and sell it.

I moved twice, each time having a new setup in place before the move. It was only 30 minutes away each time.

Long story short, I will never attempt that again. Sell it, start over when you're ready.

You have lots of options, some are lots of work, some could be expensive. If I were in your shoes I'd probably try to keep the livestock. For the fish I would set up a temp arrangement. You can keep your fish in a container that's not necessarily an aquarium, you could get a tote of some kind, as long as you meet all their needs; food, heat, filtration, flow etc. They don't need to be seen. The coral are more sensitive and require lights of course, so you can frag them and sell them and keep just frags in a grow out/frag tank. Sell the 120 move the 180 and avoid the stress of moving 2 tanks. You can pull it off with proper planning, good luck!
