So long story short, i acquired a rather oddball tank for free. Here it is:

Its a 36"x24"x48" 170 gallon. Yes thats right 4 ft tall. Set up for an in-wall or maybe some kind of enclosed island setup cause the 24" end are painted black. Im not really sure. Coast to coast external overflow with 3 holes for 1" bulkheads on one end and two 1" return holes on the other. 1" acrylic all around. Really a bizarre tank imo.

Ive no doubt it could be an awesome tank. How would you scape? How could i set up effective lighting for such a deep tank? What would you stock?

So I would go with a NPS coral tank like tubastreas. Deep vertical ledges in the ocean are just covered with them. You could even do a faux-rock background and attach them all, and just have 1 LED fixture set very blue to give it a deepwater vibe.

With that depth I'd really want to do a FOWLR. Reaching the bottom to place corals or clean up algae will be a pain. Or Clown Harem!

What would you stock in a fowlr setup? Tanks not long enough at all for any tangs, triggers, most angels im thinking. Could i get away with some type of the apolemichthys angels or maybe just stick to dwarf angels?

Curious as what the original buyers thought was when they ordered that tank.

My thoughts as well. You can imagine how puzzled i am as to how it has ended up in my possession. It must be a $3-4k tank.

Any chance they mixed up the length and height dimensions when they ordered it, and never called to check before it was fabricated? And maybe that's why you got such a sweetheart deal (I imagine)??? Haha.

Looks to be an extremely well built tank. How did you come across it?

Well ill give you the abridged version. ordered a couple tanks a few months ago from a company that shall remain anonymous for now. They were shipped in last friday, my two tanks in one crate and this one in another ( i thought my tanks were in separate crates at first)

Well both of my tanks were uh...not exactly built to my specs. Well made but a lot of little things were wrong. For instance, this tall tank has the overflow box that i ordered on my 36x24x36 tank, which has a box with two 2" holes. One of several question marks.

Anyway ive attempted to contact the company several times now but ive received no response. Could be a mix up, could be a free tank, i just dont know tbh.

Thats kinda what im leaning towards. I think they made the tank i ordered wrong the first time and just sent it anyway. I dont usually catch breaks like that though so im awaiting confirmation that its not just a big shipping fowl up.

I can't think of any off the top of my head but fish that enjoy moving up and down in the water column would be great. Dwarf angels might fit that bill.

You absolutely cannot do anything with it. I'll tell you what, just give it to me and I'll save you the headache :).

If it seems like something you'd be into, it may be for sale sometime in the future.

I'll echo what some others said, having a normal reef tank would be pretty tough, as it is I complain having to go down 24 inches for my tank, I couldn't imagine 4 feet. I think you could create a neat Seahorse tank with it, and with a deep sand bed you could add some garden eels. You could also throw in corals, and in that case I'd put photosynthetics near the top, and NPS down low as light penetration will decrease and get shaded out by corals on top
