What are the one or two items in your tank that you swear by for running your thriving system? (Skimmer, ato, refugium, rodi unit, etc)

1. Good food (all my fish except the green spotted puffer get New Life Spectrum pellets along with the usual frozen fare)

2. RODI water (I don't even use tap water for my FW tank; I had a disaster with contaminated tap some time back that nearly wiped out my entire population of FW fish - given the option, I will never use tap again!!)

3. Dr. Tim's Waste-Away (this replenishes the denitrifying and solid-waste-breakdown bacteria that may have been lost during shipping (live rock) or not introduced (dry rock)). Dr. Tim's One and Only nitrifying bacteria is also a must-have if you start with dry rock.

A good sand bed is a must for the tiny species like copepods, which are essential for keeping certain fish.

Skimmer and a solid power head for water movement. Water movement is one of the essentials in a reef tank.

+100

For me it's water movement (sps head) , skimmer , gfo/carbon

I have to say for me its good wave maker for flow and a fuge with macro algae. And of course a skimmer

On top of everything that's been mentioned, I wouldn't run my reefs w/o some type of controller!! Always a good idea for heaters to turn off and on at proper temp! Turns things off if something gos haywire!!

+1 I'll never be without a good controller again, best purchase I ever made.....the light timers were OK but would always stop during a power outage and have to be reset and they just didn't last long with the halides either

Clownfish!

A controller for sure. Consistency and accuracy are two extremely important factors in a thriving system and when you rely on a human to do that, on most cases you get neither over the long term. A controller makes that much easier.

Good power heads.imo flow is the most important part of a reef tank .skimmer would be second

there are a number of pieces of equipment but I have become controller dependent since last year when i got an apex controller
