Whats everyones SPS dip procedure??

Ok so everyone using Bayer as it seems to be the most popular now.... do you follow the same guidelines as in the video linked on the 1st page, or do you have another method or link to your way?

No, I use 10 ml bayer to 4 ounces of tank water for 5 minutes, then it goes in a cup of tank water to rinse. I do not follow the video--who puts there hands in insecticide, the stuff is hazardous. Been using it this way on probably 100 plus frags, sps and lps. I find almost no visible stress. Have dipped echinata, red dragon, pac man. Also, gotta pull or cut new frag from plug , high likelihood of eggs, and nothing kills eggs.

If the frag goes in happy (polyps extended), then it tends to come out happy (polyps extended). Never have seen a severe adverse response to dip. Of course I have had frags not survive, but the dip did not seem to be the factor (it could have been, but I do not think so because I do not see stress at the time of dipping. When you recieve a browned out frag, it always makes me suspicious of survivability because brown=stress. But assuming my parameters are stable and the frag comes from a tank with stable and similar parameters, then I expect success.)

There is a thread on Bayer, actually lots, and it seems there may be different dosages or concentrations of bayer. Have heard people report the different concentrations of Bayer, but I am not sure what they have found or not. And in those threads (reports) some people have had problems with the dip but again not sure if different concentration of Bayer or other factors came into play.

I use the Bayer at my local hardware store. Just started my second bottle, so this stuff goes a very long way.

the lowes near me had the bayer you hook on to a hose, so that might be the kind with a higher insecticide in it.???

Yeah being that I did lawncare for several years, I saw the guy sticking his hand in the insecticide water was was like WOOOOOOOOOW! Pretty sure most of them have labels that state they are known to cause cancer (among other things I'm sure lol), I know many of them I dealt with did. So let me ask this... how to you get them from the dip to the rinse water?

I normally pull the frag from the plug and glue right to my rocks so that isn't an issue. Glad to hear another person using it successfully I like that if it goes in happy it comes out happy. With my revive dips, they always seemed to come out happy, but would brown over the next day or 2 a bit then start coming back... I'd like to skip that brown period lol. I will have to do a search and check it out some more. Thanks :)

I dont think a higher insecticide would really be needed, seems people are having good results with the "regular" stuff.

Another question for all you Bayer users.... anyone dipping wild colonies with it? My LFS occasionally brings in wild colonies and maricultured ones as well so some feedback on dipping wilds inparticular would be great!

First off, chort, great thread topic. I often have wondered about what everyone does for an SPS dip. I too have typically used revive with the same results as you. In some cases, the browning lasts longer than I wish. I currently have a nice frag of ORA Red Planet that has yet to recover from the dip and it's been a few weeks. It has good PE, but still brown unfortunately. My TDF however reacted differently and is more vibrant than the day I pulled it out of the bag.

I'm continuing to follow this thread to better determine the best dip procedures myself. Thanks again.

Thanks man I was really thinking about it and thinking about how I hate looking at brown corals (Ive had several especially wild colonies go brown for quite some time, and even when they start coloring up take their time) after dipping in revive. With getting the new radion soon I was planning on getting my 30g cube up and running for a grow out/ frag tank.... until the wife lost her job today. Oh well gives me time to see how I like the Bayer on some of my cheap stuff for a little while I guess lol

Dude...sorry to hear about your wife losing her job. Interested to see what you have to say about the radion as well and again, appreciate the thread.

Yeah it kinda sucks, but its all good better things will come I am sure :)

I am definitely interested to see what the radion can do, I will probably download the software tomorrow and play around with that for a few to see how that works and not waste time when I get it LOL

Nice! I'm looking forward to hear what you have to say about it. What LED are you running now?

I have 3 panels w/ 24 3w cree LED's each, on my 180 for a total of 72 LEDs (I was using the ones from Modular LED in canada).... everyone says under powered but they were doing what I wanted them to do. ;)

Also, I was feeding 1-2 good size chunks of the homemade brew from Reef Paradise (local LFS for those that are wondering lol) that has a little of everything in it to my 20some fish, and dosing 1 part vodka, 2 parts vinegar.

I use bayer...and just because something was 'designed' for reefs doesn't make it at all safer.

5 - 6 hours in a 2.5g tank with a heater and small powerhead coupled with interceptor and FW exit. During this time I swish the frag in the water to shake loose dead bugs or eggs then inspect for bugs and eggs with a magnifying glass. Then after the 6 hours, a 6 minute bath with Revive, then into the tank.
