Whats going on with my hermit crabs?

Last night i noticed a bunch of my hermits all clustered up, i kind of thought one was being attacked for his shell, so i separated them. Then today i come home to this:

I just left them alone to let nature run its course. They are like this as we speak. The two in the middle have their shell openings together so maybe they are mating? Or battling to the death?

Throw some bigger shells in the tank, see if they separate and go for the other shells.

If you have snails I doubt there killing each other. Crabs will normally go after the easiest target for a shell.
Then again maybe they just don't like each other? It happens...
