This started happening about two weeks ago. First it was the top part then the bald spot on the side appeared.

No other corals are affected.
 
I checked for bites on other corals nothing.
I went went ahead and cut the coral off and dipped it in reef dip.
But I dont know what to look for I did find this.

Your mag is quite high for my liking. Other than that the bug there just appears to be a pod.

Yes, agreed with poster above with Magnesium. Definitely high unless your trying to eradicate bryopsis. You did not mention your salinity. What is that reading? To me, salinity & Alk are the more important parameters to monitor.

I might guess light burn, or sudden drop/too low nutrients. Has anything changed in the tank in the last 2 months? Or is the coral a new frag?

Ok. I retested and my alkalinity is at 7. I have a hard time with the color thing. I have some new water mixed in the basement and it tested 11.5. Reef Crystal's. I was going to pick up a hanna alkalinity checker today. Makes it easier to read hopefully. Retested magnesium and it's the same. I dont dose expect for kalkwasser in the ato. Maybe I will have to.
Salinity is at 1.026.
I did add a carbon and gfo reactor about three weeks ago. I did disconnect it last Thursday. Haven't ran since.

Finish my dip and found nothing. Its 2 in the morning and I am sitting here with a flash light and haven't seen anything. Just worried it(whatever it is) might jump to other corals.

I am actually having the same issues with Montis that have been growing steadily for almost a year (I posted a thread with the same topic). Strange thing is it isn't affecting any of the more sensitive Acros.
 
Looks like a combination of issues. Alkalinity swing could be the problem, N03 at zero needs to be addressed (water too clean) and light intensity (loosing color and tissue toward the light source)

Lack of nutrients causing tissue thickness to thin, light intensity then bleaches/fades the tissue. Any alkalinity swing then causes tissue death.

Blow off the algae, increase N03 and reduce your light intensity till it recovers.
 
gfo reactor about three weeks ago. Plus some alk swings possibly. Strange it's all over versus mostly top or bottom. No new monti added in last 2 months?
 
I agree with what a couple mentioned. If I'm reading this right you added carbon and gfo before this happened? I'm thinking you dropped nutrients too fast and it suffered light burns at the tips and then began dying along sides.
I would place it low and reduce PAR. Montipora are good at recovering.
 
Looks like light burn then a tornado of other unfortunate stuff like maybe newer tank and maybe some parameter swings? What lights are you using, how old is your tank? Carbon and GFO are usually a bad idea on a newer tank that does not have acute problems to solve like chronically high nitrate and phosphate.
 
As my tank grows and into its second year this is the first time I have had a problem with parameters dropping. I seem to be having a problem with keeping alkalinity up.

NO3 being at zero has been normal for be. I guess I'll have to increase that. I have been fighting algae on my sand so that's why I went and got a gfo. I thought my phosphate should be high since I had hair algea in my sump. I read that if you have hair algea anywhere you have higher phosphate. I also read that phosphate inhibits coral grow by bonding to the coral and not calcium or something like that. Alas gfo. Without testing. Again I have bought a hanna checker and it reads 0.05ppm. Is that to low?

But I also could not figure out why I could not grow cheato. But hair algea was growing. Didn't matter what type of light I used on the cheato. Used led, pc fluorescents, florescent light bulbs even a spare t5. And this was pre gfo.

GFO will be out of service for the time being. Should I feed heavier to get NO3 higher or dose?
 
Tank is 1 year 6 months old. Using an sbreef lights at about 18 inches of water.
 
NO3 testing near zero is not a problem. We do not have accurate test kits to measure it and you are not truly at zero or else stuff would be dead and there would be no algae grow. For N and P, testing for an actual number and then chasing it is fools gold combined with a fools errand... throughput is more important. There are a lot of really good tanks, and the ocean, that test near zero, but they have a good amount of import and export so that there is always some around. However, not many of these tanks use GFO and organic carbon since that can drive either too low. The bottom line is that near-zero is more than OK, but zero is usually bad.

Chaeto will not starve out the hair algae - they can live in harmony if you let them. The idea is that you remove, or get consumers, for the hair algae to eradicate it and the chaeto continues to grow in an area with no predators. If you do not regularly change water, chaeto will use up all of the iron in the system and then stop growing. Water changes will add it back, but if you are not doing them, then you might need to dose iron.

I would make sure that the whites are down pretty low, and move the monti down in the tank. That is not a great light to light SPS that are not in ideal water situations and do not seem capable of "picking up" other deficiencies in the system. While you see some nice tanks with SB Reef Lights, they seem to rarely have other issues to deal with. Once you get everything figured out and nice and stable, then you can probably turn the lights back up some.

I found that and have read that having N03 higher than P04 usually keeps nuisance algae from forming, along with proper lighting, flow....etc.

Possible reason for not growing chaetomorpha is lack of nutrients/N03 in the water collum. Need both N03 and P04 to grow it, but the reason to grow it is to reduce nutrients, not trying to grow it with no nutrients.

Increasing N03 can be done by feeding more (not the best way) or dosing potassium nitrate. I would dose N03. 5-10 is best for most reef tanks.
 
I feed my tangs once a day. Mysis and spirulina shrimp daily. lrs about twice a week a nori sheet every two days and flake food daily.

I feed corals about 2 times a week. With reef roids. Twice a week with acropower.

I do 30g water change every two weeks. And I mean every 2 weeks. My tanks is 125g and sump is roughly 60 gallons. Maybe my water changes are to small to replenish my element. I counted 49 sps.

The monti has been moved to my nano that has NO3 of 20ppm.

So I know to increase nutrients but in terms of parameters. Should I be investing in a controller yet or just start dosing alkalinity?

I am a hands on guy. Not hands in tank. I like being as close to the tank as possible tho. I fell that maybe a controller will make be to comfortable and I wont see things like this fast enough. Or maybe I am wrong. I am a old skool type of guy.
