I recently fragged a bunch of "high end" palys. I can't say that I have noticed this before but immediately after being fragged several of the palys (goochsters, Roe's rainbows and Jokers) turned partially black. A day later they were back to normal so unfortunately no pics of them. Anyone have this happen before? Any idea what causes it? I will be sure to grab pics next time, its really striking to look at.

Weird.

I have if you used cutters as I think it smashes the tissue a bit and causes something like bruising so I know use a razor when possible.

I just did some paly frags and had this happen as well, but all is fine. I think reefboy is right about the bruising when fragging. I try to scrap them off with my thumbnail first and only use razors to split/cut when I can't cleanly take them off. Some zoas grows like a carpet and can be easily pulled off the LR. Palys seems to be glued on a rock compared to some zoas.

Here is pic, notice the upper mouth has a dark color around it. Now it is back to norm. FYI- these Palys are dime size polyps

Hey Meisen,
I got some of those paly's from you along with the 2 chalice and they are fine and beautiful.
1 polyp is half black though but I dunno if you mean the stem part or the colored/head part? Mine is the head/colored part but it's healthy just half black.
I've seen that happen on other paly's and zoa's I've had and just thought they grew that way.
I asked you the name of them and couldnt remember but I'm guessing they are the Roe's rainbows? I kept thinking you meant Rose something lol.

I can try to get a picture when the lights are on.

Yep, noticing the same thing with some of my mother colonies. And yep, the ones you got are Roe's Rainbows.

Could be, just wondering what the mechanism is. Mine seem fine today, three days later.

Thanks Meisen,

Heres a pict of them. The 1 polyp has some black in it but it looks to be less than the other day when I got them.

Is that what you mean by turning black? I always thought they just grew like that sometimes. I never noticed it after fragging.

Actually if you look at the ones above them to the left theres one with a half black polyp also and those werent just fragged.
