whats in a name

Looks are what everyone wants, that's the only reason anything has a name anyways. Sad thing is everyone wants to rename things once they have them for a while and sell them as a "new release"

Given that most "names" are created for marketing purposes (create a stupid sounding moniker to drive sales), color is the deciding factor, and what palet might be deficient in whichever system I might be looking to introduce the animals too. I think what's more important is information for what the care requirements for the individual colony would be for future success in cultivation. I see many of the silly named zoas come through our shop as asst. zoas that end up being sold at $19.99 for multiple head colonies. I think it's ridiculous charging hundreds for the same colony just because someone is stupid enough to pay that for it.

Definitely looks. My LFS doesn't even bother naming them, he sales them all as wild zoas and sometimes I get lucky to where someone says "Hey you know that's a nice ______ of _____ you have there" lol. Names just make it easier to pick one out of a group of other zoas and palys.

I buy for looks. But I'm not paying over $100 for a 1/2" frag. That's obsured and the fact that people keep paying high dollar for minuscule "frags" is ludicrous.

On that note you put WWC, JF, ORA, or BC, etc etc in front of that coral it automatically jacks up the price even if it's just a strawberry shortcake cake.

I buy based upon looks, names are a nice way to catagorize color patterns. but when it comes to high end unless your an avid collector it's not worth it. As collecting the names can be a real pain . Perfect example I was looking for the original darth mauls which to me are deep black with a speckeling of crimson red but others call Valentine's Day massacres darth mauls and say they are a morph which is a whole other topic in its own.

Looks get my attention, where they came from with sustainability, aquaculture in mind decide if I take em home.

The name is just a gadget, I suppose to let you know who brought em here and what colors to expect or whatever you want to take from it. When I take my frags to the LFS I always get more credit if I can tell them how long I have had em and what conditions they look best in rather than the name.

I like Rastas, Goblins on Fire, Scrambled Eggs, Blondies, Fruit Loops, Everlasting Gobstoppers, Emeralds on Fire, Sunny D's, BAM BAM's and any other BRIGHTLY COLORED zoa does it for me. Oh what the heck, the names are fun too.
But you can find 10 different Rastas for sale and they can all look a bit different. But it's a great way to categorize what your looking for and then pick out the best.

Names are a poo poo tactic that a ton of folks get suckered into paying a higher price for a coral or frag that cost the same as non named corals of same or equal size, color and type.
This marketing scheme has made this hobby more expensive to purchase livestock from LFS, and online and the wholesalers are now cashing in on it too with premium pricing for Stores placing orders so the cost gets higher for the consumer, Us the reef keepers.
Just silly nonsense in my opinion and will continue to get worse/ more expensive as long as folks are all too willing to cough up serious cash for a name that is meaningless

Andddd they are getting them just as cheap if not cheaper now a day.

If I walk into my LFS tomorrow, and the have Gorilla Nipples, I’m buying them. Idc what they look like. I’m buying them

Put a great name on a cruddy looking zoa and see if it sells. You'll have your answer. Names are to help find what your looking for IMO nothing more.

I don't pay attention to or care at all about the silly names certain corals have (especially zoas). I'm not a zoa collector though, I have about 5 different ones and that's it. The really cool looking ones are way beyond my budget for a coral.

The names exist since zoas are difficult to id otherwise. Sps are more distinct and well studied so you dont see crazy names as often.

I buy what I like the look of. I have a wish list of "named" zoas but not because of the names but because I know what they are then lol

I do have a few named zoas such as hornets, granny apple smiths, darth mauls, rasta, sunny D etc but not at silly prices - I bought a colony of 80+ red hornets and 35+ rastas for under £30 xx

Those names will get you every time! It looks like its all about the love of the name! I have price point for any and all corals/fish I guy for aesthetics first then price point! I respect everyone that drops hey dollars on corals but I don't have a coral in my system over 60 bucks lol I'm like I can get 10 for the price of what some people pay for one!
