I have a FULL ADULT 7-8in Blue Hippo Tang that is thick and fat and perfect colorwise, not a blemish on her.

She's a showpiece

She's outgrowing my 180 by dipping up and down swimming head-on in a corner. Doing this habitually 8hrs a day.. Definitely a sign she wants out.

Sooooo. What's she worth?

I have her listed on Craigslist for $380

I think that's Market Value bc I'm seeing lil juvenile 2in'chers being sold at LFSs for $125

$380??? Too much, too little???

Fyi. I have it on CL saying the Buyer MUST have a 300g aquarium minimum

Hopefully you get what you’re asking for in terms of price. But in these situations, I tend to think that the price shouldn’t be so high. The situation is different than selling a piece of equipment on the used market.

In this case, the buyer is helping you by providing a home for a fish that is too large to keep in your own tank. Local reefers with 300+ gallon tanks looking for 7-8” fish don’t come around every day, and if there was one, you don’t want them to be turned off by the price.

Yes, the price may be fair if coming from an LFS, or online fish retailer, but if someone had a good home and was trying to negotiate you down, I wouldn’t bargain too hard. That’s just me. Good luck! Wish we could see a picture of this fish. She sounds like a beauty.

Not sure you’ll ever find someone willing to pay that for a hippo tang for a normal hobbyist.

At a LFS? Maybe. Regardless should be about getting that big girl in the RIGHT home!

Good luck!

I would say around $120-150 here in private sale. Sure, some people will be willing pay at your asking or higher price if you have the time and meet the right person.

Mine is about 7”, I would sell her for $150 in a heart beat.

Lol. Agreed with all.

What other hobby can you convince yourself to spend a $1000 upfront in retail pricing yet on the used market it turns into being worth $50

Could you imagine collectors... like gun collectors... paying $3,000 for a rare gun then when they want to sell it its worth $100 on Craigslist. Ain't that the freaking deal with this hobby? Crazy

This hobby is freaking NUTS

I'll prob just keep her until her life ends. She's waaaay too much of a Showpiece to sell for a micky mouse $100.

.

Kind of agree and disagree but its always supplies and demands and we’re also talking about livestock here. I want to get rid of mine because she nips on my sps. Now, every fish is different but mine wasn’t behaving.

Probably will end up in a 3g :p

Here’s a thread when I sold a few of my tangs just a few months ago...

From someone you runs a small LFS your asking price may turn off potential buyers. Your logic that if a small Hippo tang is x amount of dollars then a large one should be y amount of dollars may be flawed. On a wholesale level the pricing between sizes may only be a few dollars. Actually sometimes smaller examples are more expensive on some things. In my area I would probably retail your fish for around $200. It is also true that trying to sell a large fish that needs a 300 gallon tank limits your buyers by a ton. Good luck on your rehoming
