What's Swimming in our tanks?

Hi everyone,

It's been a long time, and we've had a lot of requests, so we're pleased to offer a small, but increasing selection of fishes on our website. Just a few selected species at first; however, in time, we'll offer more if the demand is there.

We have been very, very picky about what kinds of fishes and from what source that we'd offer, and we put great effort into selecting our suppliers. Our initial re-launch of fishes includes a small selection from Sustainable Aquatics and ReefGen. These sources have been selected initially because they are of super high quality, are tank-reared or captive-bred, and meet our standards for sustainability and value. We also have some excellent net-caught fishes from Australia from an excellent source that we feel good about, which will join our inventory.

Our small initial selection is up now, with more and more coming over the next few days and weeks. Eventually, if the interest is there, we'll offer you a greater variety of cool fishes.

If you have specific types of fishes that you are interested in, we'll be happy to see if we can source them for you.

Here are some of the initial fishes we just added:

We also have S.A. captive-reared Hippo Tangs, Meicanthus grammistes Striped Fangblennies, Neon Dottybacks, and some other Clownfish varieties. From ReefGen, we have captive-bred (by Todd Gardner) Mono argentus, Neon Gobies, and juveniles of the first-ever captive bred Oyster Toadfish.

We look forward to offering more and more fishes that fit our requirements, and we hope to become just as trusted a source for quality fishes as we have for corals!

Great question!

We have a very well-though-out, completely independent fish holding system. We use UV, ozone, chemical and biological filtration to assure the health and quality of our fishes. We don't have tons of fishes, yet we have about 1,600 gallons of cubicle systems. We are really able to stay on top of our fishes and acclimate, quarantine and observe each one for several weeks before releasing them for sale. Much like our corals, we decided that we will do things in a manner that is deliberate, careful, and in the best interest of the animals - and our customers.

We will be slowly and deliberately "curating" our fish selection much like we do our corals.

The Sustainable Aquatics Captive-Bred Marine Betta! We have two little guys that are barely 1.5".. I LOVE these fish!

Yeah, they are so cute at this size; still tough as nails, not the least bit delicate. I would love to see a "Dwarf Marine Betta"...would be the coolest "nano fish" ever!

We are hopeful; Eco Aquariums PNG is in a sort of holding pattern at them omen. We are working with the owner to see if they can resume shipping in the very near future. Seeing as how these were the only ecolabeled PNG fish available, we are hopeful that we can drum up enough support for the outfit to resume regular operations. We'll keep you posted!

Are the captive bred marine bettas as shy as they wild fish are? Also, will they eat flakes/pellets?

Interestingly, they are not quite as reclusive as the wild adult specimens that we typically see in aquariums. This is no doubt due to their being captive bred, which makes them used to the nuances of captivity (i.e., artificial lighting, pumps, noises, other fishes, our hands, etc.). They seem inquisitive, mild-mannered, and generally well-behaved fishes. I enjoy seeing them every day as they emerge from their PVC "caves" to say hi! This is one of my all-time favorite fishes, and I love the captive bred spin!

They eat everything we throw at them, including pellets, frozen foods, etc. I'd recommend the frozen stuff, but there are a lot of high quality pellet foods out there, too.
