I bought three coral about 6 months after I set up my very first tank. A xenia , GSP, and a mushroom.

My emerald crab immediately ate the mushroom and the xenia, and the GSP died within a few weeks of going into my tank.

Oh my gosh,, for me,, we're talking 2007.... but I'm pretty sure it was Yellow Polyps

For some reason everyone thinks they're invasive and ugly and only one step above Aiptasia.... but I always thought they were pretty cool and add color to your tank.

You never see these for sale anymore

Reclassify them as a zoa and give them a cool marketing name like Yellow Jacket Stingers and they'd probably sell for $15/polyp. Lol
I think they're beautiful based on that pic!

My very first two corals (about three weeks ago) were two beautiful gorgs, a purple plume and a corky finger. Sadly the corky died. I'm sure it was because of practically no flow around it. The purple plume was also starting to wither. I just added a powerhead and it's looking much better along with the second plume I just added. I'm going to try another corky finger soon. I love the gorgs!

I’m not going to remember that from decades ago
I don’t even remember what I did this morning when I woke up !!

Mine was definitely an illegally obtained (whilst living in the middle east) a basketball size brain coral from the red sea that I had no business in keeping 4 months into the hobby back in 2009. It did however survive about 2 years before the tank was shut down.
Wow! So where dis the coral go? I'm assuming someone bought it? It would be great to see pics of it now if it survived. Maybe it was re-seeded back into the Red Sea (if that's possible).

the first i bought was GSP so i voted invasive soft coral lol
the next was mushrooms, then some AquaSD live sale corals. the first corals i put in my tanks were given to me and i value them as much or more than the bought ones.

Love this question!
Technically I bought $80 single piece of live rock in 1998 for my FOWLR that had one yellow polyp on it. I kept trying to feed it flake food because it would “react” to it.

first coral I purchased on purpose were certainly pulsing Xenia the pink kind. Who didn’t love these until they took over your first reef tank?

not my pic!

Out of curiosity... Did your yellow polyp coral survive on flake food? :-)

I went to a Pittsburgh Marine Aquarium Society meeting, now 3 Rivers Marine Aquarium Society. I knew nothing about coral. At this point I had a fuzzy dwarf lionfish and a damsel in a 20 gallon. There was a raffle at the end of the meeting so I bought either $10 or $20 in tickets. I won a Torch, Galaxia and palythoas. They were all closed up in deli cups and I knew nothing so thought that was all that they were. I took them home and stuck them in a 5 gallon that I also had. The next day when I woke up the buttons were open and the torch heads and galaxia were extended and blowing in the current. I flipped my lid. What the heck was this stuff all extended from the closed skeleton that I thought was all that they were. Needless to say I've been hooked ever since.
Seriously, this is one of the funniest things I have ever read! I nearly spit out my coffee! Do you still have those "lid flipping" corals? LOL

I gave it back to the LFS that sold it to me, It's likely they sold it to someone else. I wish I had pictures, the only pic I have from those days was my quarantine tank. It didn't dawn on me to take pictures of my tank when I was that young.

First corals I bought. A ricordia and hammer a few weeks ago.

my first corals ever? Hydnophora, 2 monti caps and one digi, a random acro, two mushrooms, two candy canes, and 4 different varieties of zoas. (From my buddy)

Kenya tree for me! then a galexia that grew so big so fast! survived through a lot of learning too! lol

I can't believe I found a pic of it online!!!!
My first light.... circa 2007

I still have one of these in my garage, lol. I haven’t used it in probably 15 years (I swear I’m not a hoarder!). I feel like my garage is a museum of old fish tank equipment, pretty sure I’ve got regular fluorescents, VHOs, power compacts, halides, and T5s, a skilter, sea clones, CPR skimmers, maxijets, koralias, bow front tanks, aquaclears, just tons of fish tank technology that has fallen out of vogue or become obsolete. I will say that some of it came in handy this summer to keep my dog’s kiddie pool clean, lol.

The 1st and only coral I ever bought was a green star polyp. It and my tank crashed 20 years ago, and I do plan on getting another when this new tank is ready to go.

I paid $10 for a 5 x 8 inch rock covered with some generic green zoas, pulsing xenia, and clove polyps. I thought it was the most amazing thing in the world at the time.
For the price that’s good. Even if it’s common stuff.
It would be 10 bucks for a small plug of each at most stores.

This was back in 2005, so it was still a good deal but $10 for that rock would have been a much better deal today.
