What's the Lowest Temperature Your Corals Survived?

Hello reefing family!

Hey, so I wanted to share with you all an experience I had yesterday and this morning. I live in the central Valley of California. We’ve had heavy rains and wind the last two days and it was so bad that it wiped out many electrical poles in my area and in the surrounding cities. My neighborhood was affected by this and my power got shut down at 5 PM yesterday. It wasn’t until 1:30 AM the next morning, this morning, that the power was finally turned back on.

Since I have no back up for powerheads or heaters, I wrapped my 130 gallon tank in three blankets. I checked the temperature of the tank before I went to bed and it was right around 70. That was at about 11 at night. When the lights finally came on at 1:30am, I woke up and checked the tank and made sure everything was running properly. I got the temp update from my heater and it was hovering around 64°. Everything in the tank survived. I have five fish in there, four tangs and one gold nugget maroon clown fish. It seemed not to phase them at all. I have a couple elegance Corals, about six SPS. I have torches and mushrooms and zoas. Nothing seems to be bothered by the cold temperature, though it was only for about 8 1/2 to 9 hours. These reef tanks we have are much more resilient then we might expect. I might’ve gotten lucky since my tank was only down for that amount of time but I would think that they could last longer than that because when I checked them this morning, they were all acting normal as usual, as nothing had happened. Hope that gives a little bit of hope to somebody.

We got 11" of snow here in Atlanta and power was out for 37 hours. I was totally unprepared - no generator, battery backup, etc. The temperature in the tank dropped to 66.5 degrees F and there will be some (perhaps all) corals lost. So, what's the lowest temp your corals have survived?
I've got plenty of R2R alerts to take care of, so please bear with me while I get things sorted out. Thanks!

For me personally I run my LPS dominant at 74-73.5, temp is usually stable so that's what it's at

First let me say that I also believe that faith alone in Christ alone is the only way to heaven!

Back in the day before we got central air conditioning, I had a chiller malfunction and it stuck on at night. Fortunately my husband had to get up to use the bathroom and he noticed that the aquarium had condensation on it. He told me about it when he got back in bed cause he did not think that was right. I got up to look and the chiller took the temperature down to 49°F. I was horrified, my fish were swirling lifelessly on the sand and I figured everything was going to be dead. I unplugged the chiller and slowly over many hours did water changes until the temperature was in the mid 60s. Then I let the tank warm up on its own to the 70s and everything made it except a damselfish and 2 chromis. The clownfish that I had raised from an egg lived as well as fire fish goby and royal Gramma. All the coral recovered as well as a crocea clam, although some of the coral gave off a slime for a couple of days. So yes, I think our tanks are more resilient than we think!

Wow, that’s the most dramatic temperature drop I’ve ever heard of. It really blows me away that most of your fish and corals survived. Great story and thank you for sharing.

I love that verse! At 64 years old I see my need for Jesus Christ even more than I did when I was young!

I got down to 71.0 once with no loss

This happened to me about a month ago. Stupid BRS/Inkbird garbage failed.
Luckily I had a 500watt finnex new in the box. I was also down to 71 degrees. Nothing died.
