I know this picture sucks, bit I'm wondering about the white cone thingy sticking out of the live rock. It looks like a bulbous cone with brownish ridges and pieces of fresh sticking off. I swear I saw it in another place a few weeks ago, but couldn't get a good picture.

Are you talking about the very center of the pic? If not can you circle what you're referring to? And is it possible for you to zoom in and provide one under white lights if possible?

Looks like a tube sponge
"Sponge" gave me a clue, so I started looking at pictures. It may be a pineapple sponge, but all the pictures I found of both tube sponges and pineapple sponges had a distinct opening at the end. Mine does not. It looks like the business end of a big bumblebee, but all white.

Yep, distinct white thing at the very center. My phone is the only camera I have at the moment, so no better picture available.

Probably a ball sponge then if so completely harmless

Better known as white sponge, not evasive and removes dissolved organics. Make sure it has good flow around it if you choose to keep it..

@pseudorand did you say you saw it at another spot ?
Yes. It (or something like it) was in a dark corner of the liverock about a month ago. That one is gone now. I guess we could take a guess based on the lifecycle of ball sponges if this is a descendant or if it's something different that's mobile.

It looks like a limpet to me, that feeling is strengthened by that fact one disappeared a while ago. It may be the same one. If it moves tonight, then it it most likely a limpet of some sort. Algae eating CUC, very nice to have!

The other one was in the same place for a few days. It also looks soft -- limpets have hard shells, no?

The marine creatures are so many. In older tank I had for about a year some sort of snail, but instead of hard shell it was covered all together with sponge of some sort, none was able to ID it, the snail was growing and the sponge on it was growing like the snail shells. 100% there wasn't hard shell because I watch it few times under and behind it strong light, I was able to see all the stuff in this snail.
I'm not sure is it still alive, because 2 months ago I saw it constantly to stay on one spot, and isn't easy to reach it, it's in one old system which I'm not using but is working on it own and there are many snails, asterina starfish and cheato.
Probably can find some photos of it from the past if you wish to compare, but I'm telling you it was a snail with sponge on top :)
