I was sold this as a sea hare but now im thinking it's a sea cucumber. If so what kind, is it reef safe, what does he do?

He is indeed a sea cucumber. He lives in the sand and eats fish poop, and hopefully doesn't die in your tank and release toxins.

Are they prone to dying
Haha everything in a reef is prone to dying!

In all seriousness, as long as you were well prepared for a sea hare, have substrate, and have at least a moderately sized tank you're probably fine. They burrow in the sand a lot of the time. In too small of a tank it could starve.

Actually no. They are hardy, they feed at night, no threat to coral or other inverts and are pooping machines. They eat phytoplankton and small organisms within the tank and are often hunted by large starfish
