What's up with "LE" these days?!?!?!

Exusse me? DRY TOE INC? I know who your referring to, and thats sponsor bashing. Those individuals are very nice and have a passion for this hobby. Ive known both of them for atleast 3-4 years now and they havent done a thing wrong!

I personally have a bunch of the new le corals in my tank and they r amazing looking !!! The sponsor ur bashing for some reason is one of the best in the hobby bringing in new beautiful corals to farm and propagate! Why would u want just the old ones that's boring and IMO some of the new ones blow the old ones out the water!! These threads r popping up all over and it annoys me if u guys don't want le/ named corals then don't buy them simple as that !!! But u could walk into a lfs a hundred times and maybe just maybe u will find something that's as nice !!
Having named corals is good for propagation and within few yrs the 1 colony of x will be hundreds IMO that's a good thing

+ 1 on that Matt!!!! Old ... new Le stuff it's all good! Anyone who can't appreciate what a guy like Jason Fox does for the hobby just doesn't get it. I think what needs to be mentioned more often is how long these corals have been in captivity before they become a LE coral. Wet Thumbs also does a great job at growing their stuff out before selling it. To me chopping up a wild piece of coral as hot as it might be does the hobby no justice.

I like a lot of the Jason Fox corals, but can someone explain what exactly he has done for the hobby that most are not already doing via propagating? A good amount of us are ensuring the hobby can carry on without depleting the natural reefs by propagating. The only thing that sets his corals apart are the higher prices achieved by hyping any particular piece to the sky before releasing it for sale. I am under the "if I like it, I will buy it" method. A name means little to me. With all that said, the "LE" is overused. Anyone who believes that each coral that is listed as such is really LE might be interested in my LE Blond Aiptasia and Gonzo Green algae. Very few frags are going to be available, so act now!

LE corals in my opinion are great and I love a great looking coral, anyone here who knows anything about me will tell you that. Having said that, the point of the thread was that the quality and beauty of the LE corals as of late, are not what they used to be, and I would say that for every 10 corals slapped with an LE label, only 1 or 2 may be worthy of it. Maybe its the photoshop and other apps that allow anyone to snap a pic of an average looking coral, and make it look great. As for the newbie who said I was hating, well, I will let that slide as a newbie comment. If you have been in the sps game as long as many here have, then you know what I am talking about. ORA is one that has kept the high standards more then others, pearlberry, purple pillow, phils granulosa, Ice tort, plum crazy, dustins deepwater, chips, hawkins, red planet, bellina, boreallis, California tort, blue iris, German blue polyp acro. Those are some high ends worthy of LE, and they still don't rake you over the coals for a nice fully encrusted 1.5 to 2 inch aquacultured frag. Thats a reputable company right there. They are doing great things for the hobby.

I think what set his corals apart are their appearance. With me it's if i love it and it's been grown in captivity for a while i will buy it. Show us some pics of your LE blonde or the Gonzo and maybe it will sell. As usuall all you LE haters never have pics of the stuff you are putting in your tanks. End of the day whatever makes someone happy is what counts most, but dont compare the ordinary stuff to the real LE stuff.

Wow, that's probably the most unjustified comment in this whole thread. I've never referred to ANYTHING in my tank as "LE" and I have posted PLENTY of pictures on this site. You must be on your way to drinks with Jason and Steve, eh?

I'm just jealous people have the disposable income to spend $300 on a frag. I waited a few months for our local coral swap to get a few decent pieces at a reasonable price.

Where is Rodney King when you need him :ooh:

Matt what you don't understand is now a days most of the le and named corals you buy are copy cats.. People are getting ripped off unless you buy right from the source.

Example a Tyree released a LE coral several years ago. Withing months there were 1/2 a dozen vendors and some people selling frags of this Tyree coral.. There is no way in a few months people were selling this many of this certain coral, it does not grow that fast or got into that many peoples hands that fast.. They got corals that looked similar and threw the Tyree name on their coral.. Nothing but copy cat look a likes. Its a way for most vendors to charge more. Now there are some reputable vendors not all are bad and some reputable people..

Man y'all yes y'all "yeehaw" need to calm down!!!! This has been discussed a million times on here.... No more bashing or using names etc. Or I'll shut it down... Keep it constructive or keep out....;)

I miss being able to do that!

MGNY, I will give you a killer deal on the Blonde Aiptasia and Gonzo Green. They are "future LE!" But I will cut you a deal before they go sky high. LOL. I can even toss in some Braggable Bryopsis as a freebie. Of course, this is all in jest.

I am not a hater, I have a lot of the high-end pieces. I call them high-end because in all reality they are not limited edition as purported by the sellers. All corals come from the same place- the ocean. No one "owns" a certain piece. Sure, they can name it and call it LE, but that is it. I buy something because I like it, and for no other reason. I still have not heard an explanation of what these couple/few high and mighty kingpins are doing for the hobby besides inflating prices. If I frag my high-end pieces and sell them, am I not doing the same great things? No, I am doing even better because I don't rake the buyers across the coals for a booger sized frag.

Also it did not sound like he was bashing DRY TOE INC and I know nothing about them but do want to make a comment about sponsor bashing in general since so many have brought it up..

First off if a sponsor is doing something wrong I would think the owners of the site would want it posted so they know about it. I do not know the policy on that here but to me it is a huge disadvantage to allow a sponsor that is doing something wrong to continue doing something wrong. I know I would if it were my site so I could correct the problem or get rid of them. It will eventually lead to other sponsors leaving because they don't want to be part of a site that allows bad sponsors because that reputation can wear off. Also it would hurt that site that allows sponsors that are dishonest because users will shy away from that sites sponsors thinking they allow one bad apple they allow others just for money sake. Eventually that will lead to less revenue. Well that's my opinion.

Bottom line is this. If you want it and are willing to pay the asking price great. If not it doesn't pay to ruffle your panties. This is a hobby and nobody has to have any of it. It is all a want. And it is suppose to be fun. No need to complain. If it costs too much maybe you need to find another hobby. I like the fact that this hobby does cater to all levels of income. Propagated corals for the most part have made the hobby more affordable to those that at one time could never afford it. No one says you have to have a tank full of LE corals to have the tank of the month. But if you can afford it and that is the direction you want to go there is nothing wrong with that either. Just make the best of what you have and enjoy one of the greatest hobbies out there.

Some vendors cater to the high end market and others the mid level and yet others cater to the budget customer. Each one has its place. They have found a niche in the hobby and they work it to the best of their ability. I have been in the saltwater hobby for about 14 years now. It sure has changed. But so has everything in the world. It is what it is and it is the way it always will be. So you make the most of it.

Thats right Lee, its a "my purple headed red dragon is bigger then yours" type of thing. Lol.

LE is a fake contrived form of marketing. Its all about keeping price high on corals so that vendors can be vendors. I still can't get over how a booger sized eye of name your own chalice can be worth hundreds if not more. Meanwhile, such vendor sits on a large hunk, colony. Careful not to flood the market. Pathetic. Ok thats my rant.

You couldn't of said it better...LOL FUTURE L.E....I think the only L.E coral's that are worthy of a name are the old school ones that mainly old school reefers know about and have (it makes it fun to try to find the few pieces of your favorite coral the still exist )...those are the only ones I will pay money for. Most of these so called L.E. corals have not even been in the suppliers tank for more then a few weeks before they slap a stupid name and a pretty price tag on it, and then they want to sell you a fresh cut piece that has not even colored up yet for top dollar. The thing is they are selling them so fast it gives the supplier no reason not to do this, they are a business and the object is to make money right?....so the ones to blame are us the consumer!!!! don't take what I am saying wrong, I have no problem spending money on high end coral I just like to see the collectibility hold because the coral I just spent crazy money on is one of a kind and I probably will never see another like it....not just a piece that is going to be for sale by every vendor within a few weeks....

+1.. these new LE's are sprouting up everywhere and I just dont feel the need to spend $200 on some of these wild colonies that have been in a tank for only a few weeks/months. Its the Old School LE's that are worth the money, the hard to find ones, the ones that only a certain amount of people have, ones that most dont even know the name of. Those are the Real Deal LE's, not these new corals that are sold for $150 that you can buy on all these sites and are easy to find.
