Chances are ectoparasites. They can change color with their surroundings but it would be very temporary.
I'd say the odds are that it is a bacteria like a vibriosis species.
Put in a hospital tank and drop the temperature slowly to 68°F to slow up the bacterial growth, and treat for ten days with Furan II, doing 50% water changes each day before adding the new dose, one packet to ten gallons.. before any treatment, assure water quality-temp and ph are good

Good luck finding the Furan or Furan 2…
….I saved the above fishes brother using SeaChems line: Metro & kanaplex….
skip the frozen foods also, use live gut load brine shrimp…it will help with bacterial counts , water quality and feeding response…

I dunno…doesn’t look like vibrio to me, but hope that helped

As to the grabbing on to each other, it's perfectly normal. Mine do it all the time, particularly when they feed. Also throughout the day they seem to do it as a way of reconnecting, then they continue on with whatever they were doing. They're very social with one another.

As to the possibility of breeding, you'll know. It's pretty obvious what they're doing. They roll around, intertwined, then usually separate somewhat abruptly and swim off. The whole act only takes a couple minutes as far as we've been able to observe. Really cool to watch. Hippocampus erectus, btw.

i would ask @Jay Hemdal so far been the best source of medical advice i found on this site. i would put in my 2 cents but i have no history with sea horses.

As for the Furan 2, the US Gov't has stopped the sale because of something about marketing it for uses not Gov't approved for animals. If you call everywhere in your area, you might find someone with some left. Buy them all. Seriously. Others here will eventually buy them from you if you don't want it all.

API shudda re-imagined Furan 2 as a “vaping” flavor just to get it past government authorities

Looks like a male on the left and a female on the right. Males will often "drive" the females, really pester them. I prefer to keep single sex groups now. These look really good color wise and I see the orange spot file, so I imagine they are being fed a good diet.
