What's up with salt prices?

My IO reef crystals has increased from $33 to $58 a month the last 6 months. I had to cut my water changes in half to stay on budget. Does anyone know if prices are going to come back down?

From my understanding, the company that makes it implemented a MAP (Minimal Advertised Pricing) price. This controls advertised pricing of products, but you may be able to find it cheaper in store.

Everything is more expensive now, including salt for our reef tank! I believe it's inflation rippling thru our economy, affecting everyone & everything. I just bought 2 x 175g Red Sea blue buckets for my 200g+ system and they hurt my back & wallet! I don't think prices will come down soon (or ever) given the rest of the stuff is still high: housing, food, energy cost, insurance, etc.

Look at the bright side -- cut back your water changes might be a good thing? It's good for your back & wallet. I'm biased tho -- salt is an one-time cost for me, I never change my water -- ever! ha

This is the second thread on this issue. Some one mentioned you can still get a good price on IO at Petco if you wait for their sales. I use Fritz RPM and still have a lot. I’ll have to check next time I am at my lfs if it has gone up.

Once companies realize, how much people will pay..prices will never go back down..Salt prices & R/O D/I prices are the main reason I'm considering getting out of the hobby..Just maintenance alone, is getting to expensive for myself.

Are you having issues with the current salt? Switching salts can be a big deal as the ingredients from salt to salt may change.

Chewy has reef crystals and IO on sale all the time… just gotta keep your eyes open. Last time I checked petco was $90 for a bucket

Check your local fish stores if you have one nearby. Store 10 minutes from me is $65 for the 200 gallon box of Reef Crystals salt mix. I believe the owner keeps the pricing on that as low as she can, probably doesn't make any $$ of it. But over the weekend I found another store that's hour or so away that I visit once in a while that had the 200 gallon box for $48. I asked if it was on sale and they said, no, that's their normal price. I was pretty shocked.

IO purple box is $42 and the reef crystals are $45 at my LFS.

Reef Crystals is $66.70 for the Bucket on Amazon right now with free shipping. Hard to beat that.
