Whats up with this acan?

You do not need a refugium, although it'll help. Instead, doing consistent water changes and feeding less will help. Also, there are types of macro algae that you can actually put in your display tank that will also act as a refugium. Some of these are very nice looking, unlike chaeto lol

It might be hermits? Do you feed your acan? Hermits will come up and irritate them. Also what light are you using? Sometimes too much light or light schedule may be off. If you’re concerned about refugiums prices maybe consider an ornamental Macroalgae like red ogo. You can check a lfs or aquarium club and see if someone is selling it for 10-20$ and wedge it into a rock of your tank. (Not necessarily the best solution imo, a refugium is always the way to go) but a cheap band aid for now. Also, dip your Macroalgae because whatever’s in someone else’s tank will go straight into yours if you don’t do a dip.

i was thinking about placing some next to a frogspawn but im scared it will kill the algae. Will it?

If it's there now there is a good chance it's been going back, especially during lights out when they are especially active. The acan looks thin to me, it can definitely use some spot feeding, but odds are that hermit is going to keep going back for more.

I really don't see the benefit of a fuge and trying to bring 10 nitrate down. If you're talking over 50, then yeah that's something you should look in to.

Yeah I wouldn’t go chasing nitrates here, I really don’t think that is your issue. Most likely your tank is just new and things sometimes don’t settle well in new tanks. As the tank ages things tend to stabilize and you see less of this mysterious coral decline.

I got this acan last week and for the first few days it was super puffy and colorful but now it looks like that. I have it at the bottom of the tank with low light and low flow. All the other corals and fish are doing well. My water params are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate, .15 phos, 9.9kh, i dont have calcium test or mag test yet.

mine are pretty sensitive the water flow to be honest with you my acabs go from being puffed up fat and juicy to deflated and looking exactly like that from time to time dependence on the water flow and where I have my powerhead pointed
