I've got this lovely situation going on in my nano tank with this stringy gunk that covers everything from the rocks and sand to corals. It's progressively gotten worse over the past week or so. I can blow it off of everything fairly easily, but it grows back quickly and lots of my corals are significantly ticked off by whatever it is. Here's a few pics:

And here's my parameters:
pH: 8.0
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 5
PO4: .06
Ca: 440
Mg: 1320
KH: 8.4

Any idea what kind of algae or bacteria it is and/or how to get rid of it? Thanks!

what type of lighting do you have? and how long do your lights run?

I'm running an AI Prime. Lights ramp up and down for 3 hours with a 4 hour peak in the middle. They've been running with that schedule for 2 months with no issue.

What's the best way to deal with those? Been doing larger and more frequent water changes for the couple weeks this has been present. Getting ready to do a ~40% change today to try and siphon out as much of the gunk as I can. I know that peroxide and a tank blackout is one, but I've also heard that peroxide can be a bit of a gamble with inverts. Want to take care of it in the best way possible for all of my tank inhabitants.

If you awnser that question you will be rich and make alot of reefers happy :) there is a 200+ pages thread about dinoflaggelates.

Try to reduce the amount of the Mattie's manually. Make sure you have a good clean up crew. Check you ph swing.

What's on the rock doesn't look like Dino's to me. The coral yes maybe.

Small peroxide dosing is pretty safe and reduces organics that feed it and may also effect the organisim directly.

Thanks for the advice! Removed as much of it as I could manually and then went with a small dose of peroxide after my water change. Looks like maybe that's slowing the return of the gunk since it would grow back over my coral within a matter of an hour or so every time I brushed it off and so far I'm not seeing it return 2+ hours later. Hoping to get a good handle on it soon...my euphyllias in particular are super unhappy about it.

Pleas read up on the correct dosing if you haven't. There are many mixed scientific reviews of oxisiders in reefs. Also avoid buffers too.

With luck it's just an odd ball phase. In those cases I prefer a nice bacterial treatment like one and only n probidio. Avoiding MB7 as it has a minor carbon source I believe.

This is what has just popped up in my 45 gallon. Everything was fine until 3 days ago. Blast it off and in minutes it is back. Does anyone know what causes it because I have not changed anything.

Dosing info I found said 1ml/10 gallons. My tank is 13.5, so I just went with the 1ml to be on the safe side.

I've never used prodibio, but I've heard many good things. Will have to look into that if this small peroxide dose doesn't have a lasting effect.

Sounds just like mine. You can practically watch it grow it comes back so fast.

There are some instances that appear to caused by super low nutrints. Ina couple of cases, VIbrant overdose. N/P dosing is being somewhat successfully used.

Bear in mind like all organisims they are introduced. So in some cases imo it's just a bloom on initial introduction , in some cases it's driven imo by carbon sources or by another mechanics im I currently don't quite fathom. (That's the low nutrient link)

.

Ahhhh... I just changed carbon in the sump. Could that be the problem? Remove carbon or is it too late?

No, granular activated carbon is an inorganic carbon source. What I'm referring to is organic carbon. Like vodka dosing vinegar or vitamin c.
VIbrant contains some vitamin c I belive )ascorbic acid)
