Whelk?

Found a few small Trochus snails and one Nerite dead recently....empty shells. Then yesterday I see this guy on the glass. I had nassarius snails in my previous set up and used some of that rock in my current set up. It's been up almost 2 years though and had not seen any nassarius (gave away all the ones I found when tearing down the old tank).

What do you guys think...whelk or nassarius?

I'm going whelk from what I can see but not 100 % sure. Can you get a couple more pics, top down too.

That looks like a nassarius to me. Look at the snout, if it's mostly clear, more than likely nassarius. Whelks usually have a distinct pattern on their snouts. Also, whelks have a protective shell on their foot/tail so they can seal themselves in. Another good test, is drop a little food nearby and see how fast it moves? Nassarius' are pretty quick, whereas whelks are a little slow.

Slow, used my phone to magnify and it did have the "tatoo" appearance on the snout.

Can u flip him over and make him go in his shell...need to see the siphon canal to make an id.

Put him in one of my cycled QT's with a small trochus from my grow out snail tank. He was on it in just a couple of minutes. Definitely a whelk.

It looked whelkish to me but I just could not say for certain. I'm glad you know for sure and he's out.

doesnt seem to have the tattoo look of a welk.

Welcome to R2R , RO ! No comment from me on the correct ID. Easy enough to turn the snail over & see if it has a hatch cover right?

It's pretty small, when I looked at it with magnification the snout did have the tatoo markings. It did have the "hatch" as well.
