I’m so new to corals haha. How do these spread and separate? He’s already grown so much! And my frogspawn I think is getting a third “head” (? is that right)? Lemme know!

I should mention the hammer is what I’m initially asking about haha. He looks like he’s growing in a stairs shape and has definitely spouted more clusters since I got it.

That euphylla in the back is a torch, and not a hammer.

Hammers have heads that look like anvils, hence why they are called hammers.

And Euphylla can grow fast or slow... for example, a Holy Grail will typically grow slow, while as the Frammer, a Frogspawn/Hammer Hybrid grows like weed.

The one in the front looks like an octospawn variant of the frogspawn.

Also Welcome to the forum.

They don't spread like zoas, gsp (green star polyps), xenia, cloves, all mushrooms.

Hammers, frogspawn, torches all branch. Those branches are like trees.

I don't know and never seen any of my frogs/hammers drop babies like I have blastomussa and trumpet coral.

If they're growing happy for you. A nice set of bone cutters can let you prune and move branches around.

Thanks! I actually wasn’t sure we just called it a hammer; got it from a tear down tank with my clown pair. The front one is a “purple/pink frogspawn” is what I purchased it as.

Yeah, torches. Fun post though! Can we get a full tank shot?

Branching Hammers and torches grow the same - they have a main trunk / base and heads grow out of them. They grow in a Y formation

So a single head will split and become 2

Then those two will split and become 4.

Etc

And some branches or heads will split faster than others, and during the splitting process they typically appear a little ticked off. They won’t open or extend fully. They might spend random days or times being retracted for no reason

I have a teal hammer I bought as 2 heads, and in 1 year exactly it became 25 heads

I have a holy grail torch that started as 1 baby head, and in 1 year it has pinched in many places and is forming 7 heads, but none of them completely finished splitting yet so it’s now one giant funky clover shaped head.

I have a knicks torch and in 1 year it went from one head to 4 fully independent heads.

So…it varies

The knicks torch is splitting again and has taken on a shorter tentacle look during this process, it’s the purple/gold one on the left

Thank you! This was info I needed haha, so it keeps getting more and more heads someone mentioned that they “drop” so I was confused.

Welcome to Reef2Reef! I cleaned your thread up a little! We're super happy to have you here. :)

If you catch the hammer - frog bug look out. There's so many to collect

You’re welcome!

It won’t spread, and that main trunk base pretty much stays the same. It will get taller. It will get wider. It will get bigger. But I wouldn’t call it spreading.

If you feed torches, it is not uncommon for them to look upset 1-2 days later and be closed up. “Nature calls” for them also after they digest and they will be closed up and then return to normal when they are done

If you feed them directly aim for 2x a week to allow for these processes to complete otherwise they can get over full or backed up.

If they drop heads off…it’s a last ditch survival attempt resulting 90% in death for that head.

Okay that makes so much more sense! Haha, I don’t have any heads dropped or anything like that, the things just spreading and such so I’m glad it’s doing well. Someone mentioned bone cutters or I would probably get a coral saw to cut some frags, I wouldn’t mind having some of that dude in my lil nano tank.
