Probably already mentioned but get a Seachem ammonia alert badge. My 2nd tank is a couple of months old. Once it cycled , I added only one pair of clowns (300 gal tank). I tested daily for ammonia and kept the Seachem badge in the tank to double check.
Once you are sure it is cycled add fish very slowly. Adding too many too fast is very bad for a new tank. Even after it has cycled, too many fish can cause an ammonia spike.
Ammonia can cause gill damage etc. to fish.
FISH STOCKING LIST
It is great both you & your wife are excited about stocking your tank!
Before you add even 1 fish make a list of what you would like. Read stocking lists threads here on R2R. Order & compatability are very important. If you add fish in the wrong order, it can hinder adding new additions peacefully. You want peaceful/timid fish settled before more boisterous/aggressive fish.
So you both can have fun now looking at possibilities @ a LFS or online. Make a list. Share it with the R2R experts. They helped me pick an awesome group of beautiful fish. They will advise you on stocking order & how to add fish safely.
