When can i turn the lights on?

We bought a Reef LED90 for our 44gal. BRS says to wait 4 months before turning it on since theres basically a microbiological war going on in the tank during this time. Should I wait before adding this light or is it safe if the tank is done cycling? Is this just for algae prevention? Does it matter if I add a utility fish and turn the light on?

Fish could be ok without the light as long as there is ambient light. Once you get corals you NEED the light

I would wait till you see coraline algae, it will help keep the ugliness at a minimum.

I did dry rock so I'd be waiting a really long time lol.

Yea that’s for sure lol. Honestly you’d be fine now. But if you want to wait, wait until you get corals.

I did dry rock so I'd be waiting a really long time lol.

Not really, about 3 months you should start seeing it. I did dry rock as well, once you start adding your clean up crew, it normally seeds the tank with coraline. i took the advice this time around and had a very little ugly stage.

mind you this is my 5th tank build in 15 years, 3rd ive started with dry rock.

yeah cleanup crew would help, your going to need it anyway, you will have some stuff happening shortly that will require it, you can feed sinking algae pellets to feed them for the time being untill you have food for them. id stay away from magic bottle coraline elixirs

Ive only heard bad things here. It needs to be reset at times and requires taking the entire thing apart. Its just my opinion but if you are paying for the high class LEDs you are better off with AI, kessil or Radions, AI being my bias.

Coraline in a bottle is great. It’s not a “magic elixir”. It is actually spores that have been bottled
