When I change my water , should I be adding salt to that water? I got RO water from my LFS.

Thank you for taking your time to read my question and helpin me out :)

Yes, you want the new water to match the perimeters (SG, Temp, PH, ect) of the water in your tank, or you will shock your fish.

You should mix your salt into your water several days before you plan on using it. You also will need to test the salinity and adjust it to match the water in your tank. When mixing salt you need to aerate it with a powerhead or small pump to get it all mixed together.

Yes you add salt to the water change water but not to the top off water added for evaporation. Salt does not evaporate so you only ad RO/DI for top off.

For over 30 years I have mixed my new saltwater immediately prior to using it, never have I mixed it even a day in advance. Several people did a test a few years ago and found it made no difference as long as the salinity, pH and temperature of the new water was close. FutureDoc even used some pretty sophisticated data logging instruments and the new water wasstable within minutes and did not change over the next few days so there is no reason to make it up very far ahead.

+1
I use to mix my water 3 days to a week in advance, but with the new formulas available in the salty mixes I maybe wait an hour now...and that is just so the temp matches up better. The salt is mixed with in minutes now

If I need to raise the temperature, I keep a couple old Mag 7 and 9.5 pumps around and throw one in the Rubbermaid trash can for a bit. Work better than heaters and also aerate the water and mix the salt. Around Phoenix the water is usually too warm so I bring the jugs and trashcan inside from the garage the day before to let them cool to house temps.

Matching the PH is a challenge for me because my meter is not calibrated well. So for the last several months I have only topped off.
