I change my GFO when...

  • Tank PO4 starts climbing

  • Every 2 weeks (or other fixed period of time)

  • When my GFO reactor effluent PO4 starts climbing

  • GFO? Don't do it! PO4 is food for your aquarium, too!

More than anything, I'm wondering if people test the effluent of their GFO reactors. I made the comment about how I do it awhile ago and was surprised that no one else does this.

I put a large amount of GFO in my reactor and use a valve to throttle flow through it. If my tank PO4 is too low, I throttle it back. Too high, and I put more flow through it. When I get to the point that flow is almost at maximum I test the reactor effluent every few days. When the PO4 coming out gets above 0.02ppm I know it is time to change it. I can generally go 6 weeks without changing GFO.
I feel this cuts back on tank maintenance and saves money on GFO since I only change it when it needs changing. I'm lazy that way.

So, now that you know what I do, am I crazy? What do you do?

I change it monthly. I run a nano and run it in a sock in my sump with the flow through that compartment. I've dialed in the amount to maintain levels at .02. If it's higher I replace or up the amount. If it's unmeasurable I back off or feed more.

Nice to know at least one other person tests the water coming out of their reactor!

I just change mine every 3-4 weeks and now only occasionally test phosphate levels as it always low.

I use rhowaphos and by changing it it keeps phosphate locked down
