When do you dose?

I see, I was wondering the same. But again I tried at night and in the morning and no real difference. So I just dose when I feel like it either in the day or at night. Just depends on when I get to it. I also only dose like 10 ml on a light stocked 180
Thats probably why you don’t see a difference, 10ml on a 180 is a very low dosing requirement. But if your keeping SPS the requirement will be a lot different. So you have an idea, my tank is around 100 including sump and I dose 130 ml per day now as Im also using kalwasser. But at some point I was at 170 ml per day so having 24 dosing points helps a lot to keep the alk stable.

Agreed that’s not much on a 180. I’m dosing about 25 mL of each part on my 40 gallon SPS tank. Even still I see a swing over a 24 hour period.

As long as the swing is small and steady I wouldn’t worry about it unless you can find an easy way to fix it without changing something else.
Very true, so is 0.5dkh over 24 hours every day something to worry about. Things were more stable than this when I had my 150 so I don’t know if it’s because I have a smaller tank now or not. Also if my target is 7dkh, is it better to have the 7dkh during the photoperiod and 7.5dkh during dark hours or 6.5dkh during photoperiod and 7dkh during dark hours?

Drip kalk. I have 5 gallon bucket RO/DI Kalk mix dripping into my tank at all times. I manual dose 200 ml of 2 part morning and evening. The Kalk helps to keep things from fluctuating too much in between doses, and is all around very beneficial for the tank, imo.

Guess I'm in the minority. I level out the PH drop at night (reverse photo period?) by dosing BRS Soda Ash.

Yeah I’m sure a constant drip of kalk is a good stabilizer. I tried kalk on a doser but didn’t quite do the trick.

What does that do to your alkalinity levels through the day?
Not a clue actually. . . I don't test weekly, nonetheless twice a day for Alk . . . never struck me as crucial so long as the level was always within an acceptable range when I did test it. I just want to know that the dosage is keeping up with the depletion.

Just pick a time and try to do it at the same
Time each day bud, or get a doser and break it up during the day.

Not sure if it matters, I used to dose every hr 24/7 and had great success. It wasn’t until recently I acquired a trident and started noticing the swings. Now, I’m adjusting the dosing based on the testing results which was 8 or 12 times a day. I have my dosing down with 0.5-0.1 swing between day/night.

90g mixed reef. I dose 20 cc BRS soda ash every Monday and Thursday. 5cc Brightwell iodide same schedule. Both as lights dim down. Alk stays at 6.1 to 6.3. pH at 8.
25% water change three to four weeks.

That’s cool! I know copps used to do this on his 180. I have met a number of experienced reefers who dose their daily two part in one or two doses by hand. Everyone of them does it because of experiences with doser failure. I think people focus way to much on specific numbers for all these days when it’s not really needed.

I understand that. When I test at the same time I usually get the same values so I’m matching my consumption on a daily basis, I just started to dig in deeper to the daily swings.

I do use a doser and dose approximately 1mL every hour for 24 hours. When I test daily at the same time I get the same 6.5dkh, so I know I’m consistent on a day to day basis. I guess I was just starting to get into the swing between morning and night based on coral consumption during the photoperiod and was wondering if that 0.5dkh swing was worth looking into and whether it was worth trying to concentrate more of my dosing during the photoperiod. It seems like it may not be a big deal though.

If you want to have an idea how much is your swing day to day, take a reading 1hr before the lights goes ON and another reading 1hr after lights goes OFF. This will help you have an idea of your swing. Don’t stress to munch if around .5, but it can be a little better if more dosing occurs during the photoperiod.

That’s exactly what prompted me to ask in the first place. I get around 7dkh 1 hour before lights come on and 6.5dkh right before they go off. So it’s basically a 0.5dkh swing every 12 hours (0.5dkh rise overnight and 0.5dkh fall during the day). If the consensus is that it’s no big deal I won’t change anything but if minimizing that daily swing would be better then I will try to figure out how to do that with my doser.
