I've seen what happens when chalices meet other corals, but I've haven't had any experience with favias growing into each other.
What's the likely outcome of these two when they get close enough?

Nope! I had a favia garden in my last tank. All of the frags where 1" plus and I had 25 of them all hanging out within 1/2" distance of each other! No stinging occurred! The only one I had problems with was a Indo dragon soul favia and that was because it originated from a different region than the rest (obviously Indonesia). So good luck but its likely they wont sting unless they are from different regions of the world.

in fact, I have even seen a grafted favia frag once. It was a JF bipolar mixed with what I believed to be a aussie dragon soul

If one grows faster then the other it could overgrow the slower one. I have had that. But if they are from the same region and close enough in relation they could graft together.
