When should I add macroalgae to my fuge

So I'm cycling my first tank. Ammonia = 0, Nitrite = 5ppm+, Nitrate = 40ppm+

At what point is it safe to add algae to the fuge?

Appreciate any help.

Anytime, you have nitrates

You should strive to keep nitrates > 5ppm. Start feeding your system, algae will compete with coral for nutrients.

My systems run 20-40ppm and more. I dose ammonia and feed heavy.

Don’t add macro until your system can sustain its growth. Macro, just like coral competes for the same nutrients. Be ready to feed your system.

But macro and micro also takes the bad nutrients out your tank as in silicates.
When no corals in the tank add macro to your fuge or sump to get a hang of your nutrients control before you add corals.
It’s part of tweaking your tank naturally.

Oh and if you think you’re going slow, slow down even more, only bad things happen fast in this hobby.
I never seen a frag turn into a colony overnight but......... I have seen plenty of colonies turning into frags overnight or worse

I tend to agree with managing nutrient control techniques before adding coral. If that is the case, what would be an ideal companion with macro growth in refugium. Where are the nutrients to grow the macro? Perhaps some fish in display.

Tell us what do you want your dream tank to be. What is going in it? If this is your first marine tank, might I suggest easy to care for mixed garden of softies, lps and maybe some ornamental macro in your display.

There is plenty in almost cycled tank.
If you get the hang of it you can schedule your skimmer to run only a few hours during the night.
Add the Nano Micro bubbling to it and you going to have a amazing tank and never have to worry about a algae outbreak.

I am not set on what my dream tank would be. I believe I have selected the minimum equipment to have some options as I grow more experienced. Ultimately, a mixed reef is kind of where I'd like to be. At the moment I am looking to establish my maintenance routine and learn how to maintain good water quality.

Patience in this hobby is definitely the most important thing. Never make an impulse purchase or change is key. It is hard but down the road you will save so much headache and money. The truth is people who are really patient don’t usually notice how much troubles they have saved. It’s always the ones that are not so patient ended up kicking themselves and regretting. This comes from someone kicked himself in the rear multiple times.

Update: I took a chance and dropped my golf ball sized Cheato in the Fuge and it had no affect on my cycle and is now tripled in size. 0 ammonia, 0 Nitrite, and 10 PPM Nitrate for the last 3 weeks
