my new chalice colony totally bleached, its been in the tank for three weeks now. it bleached b/c my lights stayed on for two days, well thats what i'm thinking. also my magnesium is high up to 1600. should i trash it now or give it time to come back?

NEVER trash something even if it has just a little bit of life left! ;)

+1

If it has any tissue at all left, leave it in the tank. You would be surprised what saltwater will grow. It is the best healing agent in the world as far as I am concerned.
I have had stuff grow back that I KNEW had to be head and gone. I have only had it happen with LPS though - sps is a totally different animal as far as that is concerned.

if it dies wont it release bad stuff harming others. the lfs i go to always trash there dying corals because of it.

LOL - no and yes.

Yes, ANYTHING dead will put pollutants in the water - just like the food we feed our fish.
It is only a concern if you have a 1 gallon tank :)

It takes a good amount of corals all dying at once to take a tank out and harm the other inhabitants - hence a "tank crash".
One coral in a 30g+ tank shouldn't cause any issues.

100% Agree...

Leave any frags or corals that are dying till they are completely dead, unless they are all dying at once. Then you have mucho problems!

you think the high mag can be bad? how can i bring it down to say 1400? thanks you guys are the best.

1600 magnesium shouldn't kill chalices, especially if it's been in there awhile. (Personal experience).

It will start anesthetizing larger snails like trochuses, turbos and margaritas though if you get it any higher.

keep it in the tank. The coral behind the purple tang fell behind some rocks where I couldnt get to it. By the time I switched tanks and found it, it only had a couple spots with a hint of green and here is it is today looking good and growing. So keep it in the tank and hope for the best

by the way the coral is some kind of lps. I know it looks like zoas but it is not.

check you prams I am sure that something is going on that is causing it to bleach. this happens with tank with photos periods of 6 h like my frag system. I find that most often it is caused by alk too low or ph stable. now every tank is a little deferment. good luck

I had a frag of WWC Big Pimpin chalice fall upside down in the sand for 2 days, the whole frag looked dead but I put it on a frag rack just to see. That was 2 months ago. I now have 1 1/2 eyes back. Just let it be. Wait it out.

How much light is it exposed to? They dont like very high lighting and do bleach out rapidly if over exposed. Try moving it to a dimmer area of the tank such as under an over hang and see if it starts to recover.
