So I had a clown in my tank after a week and left him in there for a while till I noticed the diatoms and the water got bad quick. So I figured it was that he successfully jump started my cycle and I brought him back to the LFS. my water is still pretty bad levels are high but not as high, should I still be feeding the tank ? And when should I do my first water change? My diatoms are starting to go away already (been about a week since they really came on hard and that's when I took the fish out as well) but I've Also stopped feeding the tank..

Tidus You should never use a clown to start a cycle.....

Buy a test kit and a small bottle of pure ammonia. ( ace hardware) And read about fishless cycleing. Its fast easy and When your done you can add a couple of fsh all at once. Pluss it dosnt dirty up your water.

Dont add live stock till your reading All 000

Do a waterchange after its cycled. Its kinda pointless to do any while its cycling. Unless your trying to save somthing on the live rock.

If you have another lfs go there. The lfs that told you to do that either don't care about our animals or don't know nothing about nothing.

Tidus Its Ok. Whats done is done. You shouldnt use Live animals to run a cycle. Now you know. The Fish store that sold you the fish. Has OLD SCHOOL thinking. And will likely steer you the wrong way later on. So Dont take there advise. If i was you i would use this site to its fullest. There is no Dumb question so ask many and often. And Use the search bar! Lol

For now i would use Either the shrimp Or the Fishless method.

Have fun

I agree with whats been said. Lots of times the lfs hire people and don't spend time to train them. You should listen to what people on this forum have to say and judge for yourselve. My experience with reef tanks is simple cured live rock, skimmer and good circulation. As far as cycling i have used bacterial additives from lfs. I have actually set up a reef and when the water clears i slowly add my stuff and keep a eye on my water parameters and have had no problems. I had never heard of adding a dead shrimp before untill i got on this forum. Also i strongly suggest to not overfeed your fish or corals that is where problems develop fast. Be patient and go slow.
