so, I ordered a 112g, when can I order a purple tang and house it in a 32g till the new is up and running? what kind of time frame do I have? I'm assuming the biggest issue is ich? then head butt? as of today, I'm guessing 4 months but could stretch to 6 months.

Sorry, need a bit more info.

Are you asking this with other tank mates in mind?

Asking how long the cycle is gonna be?

How long the QT is gonna be?

Very confusing here

Agree with above post but also don’t house a fish in a tiny tank while you wait for a new tank. What of tank come defective or lost in shipping or many other issues.
If you want it early to start the qt then I would wait until the new tank is up and running. Purples are around more times than not. Even quality marine breeds them

I'm thinking if I find a sale on a purple, how long can I have it in a 32g before it would outgrow it sort of situation. My one fish in the 32 are 2 small clowns. Thinking if I see a deal, I can order one and house it till I get the 112 up and running. how long? live rock and live water....

Well when is the 112 coming?

And how long will it take to be fish ready?

I am guessing it'll take close to two months from now for it to be fully cycled and and set up.

You can use the 32g as a QT, and it should be fine for the duration of the 3-4 weeks in QT.

(and please do use the 32g as a QT Because you have it set up anyways).

So don't order a purple tang until you are 2 weeks from your tank being absolutely ready

Depends on the size you get. I got a powder blue, and it was way too small (smaller than expected) for my 200g with my ~7yo purple tang. So, he's perfectly fine in a 32g, with a clown and some RBTA's, I built a few months ago. When he grows some more, he will get scooped and moved to 200g. That may be months from now.

Sounds like this thread has already been descended on by the tang police so take advice with a grain of salt.

If you order one small it can be housed in the 32 for a while until the larger tank is up and ready. 2 clowns are the problem if they are the only fish in the 32 currently they might be very territorial towards the new tang

I had to house a purple in a 70 for two weeks, he was NOT happy. I would wait until your tank is up and running for one; 32 he will be upset

Mine was an adult. If this is a baby like the biota yellow tangs then probably okay!

Also I would also co sider stocking of your new tank, purples can have a really nasty attitude and should be last added

Given that it's a 112,hopefully it's the only tang, which would probably be okay then

Unless its a six footer, give room for another but with the 112 Im thinking not

To answer your question - Tangs grow quickly for the first couple years - So - it depends on the size of the tang and the size of the eventual tank. You want to start with a 32 gallon - you would need to get a small tang - to 'eventually' put in your 112 gallon. However your question does not make complete sense to me - There would be no reason not to just wait until you have your 112 gallon tank. If I were you I would buy your new tank - put down a deposit - or however they do it at your LFS - then QT the fish and put it in your 112 gallon tank.
