When to replace a pH sensor?

Hi all,

I've had my GHL Profilux P4 for about 2.5 years. As I understand it, pH sensors last 1-2 years. Is there a way/test to tell if the probe needs to replaced? (Rather than just replacing it outright just because it's 2 years old.)

Is it reading differently than another pH meter? if so replace it. at 2.5 years - replace it... IMHO

I haven't compared it against another pH meter... It's either spend $35 on an electric pH tester, or $35 on a whole new probe.

Was trying to buy only one of those, lol!

I would replace it then. You can also buy calibration solution - assuming that your until allows that - BRS sells ph 4 and ph 10 fluid

Every 6 months I check mine and see if they are reading calibration solution properly (7&10 for the tank, 4&7 for CaRx). If they are not, I go through calibration steps. After calibration recheck against solutions. If yes, then good. If not then probe replace time.

I have a pretty good sense of the pH of my tank (and how it varies by season and by time of day). When I think the probe is reading off, I recalibrate it (every few months typically). If it won't 'hold' the calibration I replace it. I do tend to 'push' my probes, but agree with the other chaps: 2 1/2 years = replace!
