When would you start your refugium?

Hello Everyone,

I’m wondering how every decided it was time to start running their refugium. I have been taking it pretty easy with my 90 gallon just doing biweekly water changes and changing my filter socks every 3-6 days depending on how water test go. I’m really trying to avoid any trouble that may come with double zero test results. For this reason I have not ordered my skimmer or started my refugium yet however yesterday my phosphate tested a little high at .05 and my nitrates tested ok at 0-.01. I’m interested in hearing when everyone decided to get their refugium going and what they used as an indicator. I’m aware the refugium can be tuned as well with the amount of time it’s on but again I don’t want to battle with another pest because I got ahead of my self and ran double zeros for two long. Any input is appreciated !

Sounds like you might be ready. I tried to start one right after my cycle and there wasn’t enough in the tank to feed it so my chaeto melted away. A couple months later I tried again and it’s been growing like crazy ever since.
